From the grounds of the Hotel Los Lagos in La Fortuna, the volcano is a dominating presence.  We spent the day here: for one all-inclusive fee of $45 per person, we could wander the lush grounds of the complex, enjoy the pools and water slides, soak in the hot springs, explore the mini-zoo with crocodiles, turtles, a butterfly garden and a leaf-cutter ant display, and enjoy a thrilling zip-line trip through the rain forest.
