I had a constant companion on my trip to China at the end of 2007 – rain. From Shanghai to Xian to Guilin, raindrops kept falling on my head and overcast gray was the dominant color in my photos. That was especially a problem in Guilin, known for its natural beauty. Tired of cruising the city streets in the rain and fog, my husband and I headed for the Reed Flute Cave, expecting more a temporary escape from the rain than anything memorable. But once inside, we discovered otherworldly stone pillars illuminated by myriad colors that highlighted the unique formations. The centerpiece of the cave, shown in the photo, is the Crystal Palace, an area where a perfectly still pond reflects the formations like a mirror. It turned out that the Reed Flute Cave was one of the most striking places we visited in China.
