Description:

Constructed before the Civil War to guard the entrance to Pensacola Bay, Fort Pickens was an active military installation until it was turned over to the National Park Service in 1947.  The fort was held by Union forces during the Civil War and was outfitted as a coastal artillery battery during World War II.  This picture depicts some of the origianal housing and administrative structures through a breech in the fort walls caused by an accidental explosion in a powder storage area.
