Description:

A very hot summer day in Munich made liquid refreshment a necessity.  My wife and I had spent hours walking around the tourist attractions of the old section of town.  We needed to take a break and get out of the afternoon sun. The same thought seemed to have occurred to everyone else in the Viktualienmarkt, or Food Market in the city center.   After purchasing an order of Weisswürst and two tall Weissbiers my wife and I searched and searched for a place to sit down.  It seemed like every table in the wide expanse of the market was occupied.  Our confusion and discomfort apparently struck the heartstrings of one German family; they offered us the two unoccupied seats at their table beneath the shade trees.

At first neither group seemed to want to admit that the other was at the same table, but after a couple of drinks from their own tall beers we had the German family howling in laughter as we ate the entire portion of Weisswürst, skins and all.  They broke the silence between us by imitating farting noises then informing us that no Bavarian eats the skins of these sausages because of the resulting gastric discomfort one would feel the next day.  From there the conversation shifted from a discussion of German vs American food, to differences in education, tastes in music, who made the best beer and what a German tourist would want to see in America.   I don't recall how long we talked but i remember having at least three of those big beers and a pretzel or two also.
