      This is a view from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence Italy.  Below is the Uffizi mall.  There are often some very interesting street performers in the mall area. The tower in the center belongs to the Palazzo Vecchio.  Slightly to the left and in the distance you see the dome of the Florence Duomo.  If you like art, you will love the Uffizi.  We only spent a day going through it and were very rushed.  It could easily take a week to thoroughly enjoy it.  I believe this section of Florence is or was at one time considered to be the heart of Florence.

      You can't beat the weather. If you love the heat - the summers in Moab bring it. Summer temps can top 110 F. However, escape from the heat is only a short drive up the La Sal Mountain Loop Road, where temperatures can be up to 30 degrees cooler. 

      Moab and the surrounding area is historically and geographically rich with ancient Pueblo/Anasazi dwellings and cliff art to modern Native American cultural influences. The unique geography has drawn movie producers, including Stephen Spielberg and are a draw for amture and professional photographers alike. You can'f find many places that are blessed with as many state and national parks, forests, and heritage sites! Cuisine and shopping opportunities are enriched by the many ethnic and cultural influences in the area. Moab even had a hand in the Cold War (as a uranium mining center - no worries, no enriched uranium and the mills have been closed for many years).

      One of the most photographed bridges in the world, Ponte Vecchio is a shot I took very very early one morning as I was going to class when I studied art in Florence. 

       

      This shot is one of my favorites because of the details. For example the canoe under the bridge that is parked on the shore of the river. This was taken with my 150.00 Nikon camera and i think for the money this camera is amazing!

      North of Albuquerque NM is the town of Abiqui, famous for a outsider from New York. Geogia O'Keefe adopted this area in 1934, eventually making it her home. From this country she excited art lovers everywhere. I took this photo in the vicinity of the Ghost Ranch, where O'Keefe had a studio. I only wish that this lonely burro could appreciate this rich beauty as he wanders this colorfully striated landscape.

  • Duck Theft in Moscow, Russia

      Our guide told us that, in 1991, Barbara Bush presented to the people of Moscow, Russia, this sculpture of a duck leading its ducklings. Unfortunately, every now and then one or two of the ducklings would go missing, stolen probably for the metal. Several of the ducklings, over time, had to be replaced. This got to be such an expensive problem that the Russians had to build a guardhouse behind the statue -- it's seen in the photo. With a 24-hour guard (no telling how much that costs), no more ducklings were taken, but, the guard hut in the back doesn't do much for the aesthetics of the sculpture.

      A couple of years ago, as I was leaving a church in Rome, I spotted a woman sitting on the sidewalk holding her baby. With a cup in front, she was obviously a beggar. It was so touching that I snapped a quick shot. When I returned home, I did an oil painting of the scene and used it for my Christmas card, with the title Madonna and child.
