Last summer I ventured on my first solo road trip. Leaving Zion National Park I took roads less traveled, even driving the whole "loneliest road in America" --yes, it was desolate but also amazing. The only thing directing my travels was my search for water. I headed toward a lake on the map. California. I pulled my car out on the sand next to what seemed to be the only tree in the deserted scene. I set up camp and got my swimming suit on. Something then caught the corner of my eye and when I took a closer look I found this little guy. Not only him but his entire family too. There were so many I couldnt believe I didnt notice them before! They were running in and out and all over their tree. They jumped on my tent and slid right off. They were quite entertaining and seemed as if they were actually excited to see me. After a few days on my own, I was glad to have the company.
If you ever get the opportunity to go to Bora Bora, DO IT! This was a trip of a lifetime. Just looking at this photo brings back such fabulous memories! My husband and I took an excursion where we swam with reef sharks, played with stingrays and had the best meal of our lives on a little motu which had a most spectacular view of Bora Bora!
Moab Utah is the guardian to some of the coolest sandstone structures around. Arches NP has not only the 'hole-in-the-middle' arch that we think of, but some really other-worldly shapes. A late afternoon drive thru the park just happened to coincide with the moon rising behind these shapely towers. Being thrilled with having both the sun and moon up at the same time, I grabbed for the camera.
Taken on a recent trip to Arches National Park in Utah. This was one of the most breathtaking places I've ever been. Everything from the sky to the sand and rocks was otherworldly in its beauty making this one of my most prized photos from that trip.
Budget Travel chose this for an award previously and they use it on the website when they write about Boston. So this one isn't in the running for the Hawaii trip.
This shot was taken from the beach at Sanur on the island of Bali. Two Indonesian teenagers were sitting in the water flirting with each other. I love this photo, because the colors and water surface really capture the serenity of Bali.
In my younger days I was mesmerized by photos in text books of Mont Saint Michel, a Gothic-style Benedictine Abbey, built between the 11th and 16th centuries, dedicated to the archangel St Michael, a Wonder of the Western World that was built on a rocky tidal island in Normandy, France.
A short time ago following my retirement I planned a trip to France and of course on the top of my list after visiting the Normandy beaches, was a pilgrimage to Mont Saint Michel as others have done since 708 A.D.
By rental car with impatient fervor I made the trek from the D-Day Beaches. Finally from over ten miles away I could see the famous silhouette of the abbey rising to heaven before me.
I nervously approached the parking area which stood across the road from the Abbey. I jumped out of my car, camera in hand to take my first excited photos. But before the first snap, suddenly from what seemed like from out of no where appeared one of the worst thunder storms of my life. I jumped back into the car and sat camera in hand for what seemed like ages as the wind and rain rocked the car back and forth.
Finally it stopped and I ran like a little kid down the long causeway leading to the island and Mt Saint Michel. I was approximately 30 yards from the entrance gate when another storm broke out. I made a mad dash to the gate but with just a few more yards to go a torrential cold rain suddenly pelted down like bullets in a scene from Saving Private Ryan.
So to make a long story short my visit that I thought about in my dreams for many years and hoped to take wondrous photos of turned out to be a stormy day in Normandy.
Still one of the neatest places I have ever visited. I would love to go back some day and see it with blue skies, birds singing and a bright sun shinny day.
In Maui, we made our way to the end of the Hana Highway, to the actual town of Hana. We had read about Koki Beach, a red and black sand beach that was slightly hidden. We found the steep trail and made our way down to the unique beach. The shot is what we saw when we looked to the right. It was truly majestic. We feel the shot looks like an oil painting!
Costa Rica was the first chance I had to try out the new close up lens I got before leaving. The screw on macro lens allows you to get within 1 inch of your subject. But I quickly found out that it is tough to get a butterfly to tolerate some yahoo with a camera within an inch of his face while trying to eat.
It is said that an elephant statue with its trunk raised is good luck. I snapped this photo of a baby elephant in Tarangire National Park in Tanzania. I felt very lucky getting the shot because usually the babies were well protected by the older elephants and out of the camera's view.
This photo was taken when a friend and I were visiting Sedona, Arizona. We were looking for a local swimming hole and received directions from a local. We got to the "fork in the road" and took a wrong turn. We were miles and miles up a mountain when we realized our mistake. Agitated and tired we were making our way back when this amazing view caught my eye and ended up being the most magical photo from the entire trip. Moral of the story? Sometimes the road less traveled is the way to go!
