    • Description:

Believe it or not, we found this gem by accident! As we were leaving the breathtakings views of the Ka 'anae Peninsula, we decided to turn down a dirt road instead of going back to Hana Highway. We saw a baseball field, and thought there might be a bathroom. Not only did we find the bathroom, we also got to meander around this beautiful scenery!

  • Death Valley Artist Drive Death Valley Artist Drive

    • From: horbinsr
    • Description:

I had never been to Death Valley before and was only familiar with the name from the 1950's TV show "Death Valley Days" (yes, I did watch it). I was impressed with the beauty of the emptiness and desolation, the distant blue mountains with the expanses of flat sand, dotted with lacey, brownish 'plant life'. The salt flats of Badwater Basin (lowest place in the US at 282ft below sea level) were intriguiging and a gret place to do ultra close-ups of salt formations, but what made me fall in love withn the area was absolutly marvelous, drop-dead gorgeous array of colors of the minerals. These images represent just some of what turned me into giggling school girl at every turn (please don't take offense).

Found mainly along hwy 190, between Badwater Basin and Stovepipe Wells, the sand (or gravel) consists of so many colors you have to name them descriptively. Chocolate, carmel, turquoise, mustard, vanilla... on and on. Some of the absolute best displays are found along Artist Drive. A curvy, dippy ride thru the colors of creation.

Driving back from Badwater I spotted some flashes of solid color along the side of the road. Scretching to a stop I discovered it was a small bolder containing pockets of mineral deposits before they are turned into graceful flows of luscious flavors. I shouldn't admit this, but if that bolder was any lighter, it would have a special place in my home right now. Oh! To posses a piece of God's pallet.

  • Face to face with a polar bear Face to face with a polar bear in Churchill, Manitoba

    • From: gizlau
    • Description:

I've been dreaming to go to Churchill, Manitoba in northern Canada for years to see the polar bears.  Booked a trip with Natural Habitat Adventures for a 6-day Classic Polar Tour offered mid-October to mid-November annually.  This is when polar bears are migrating and waiting along the shores of the Hudson Bay in Churchill for the ice to form.  We travelled on a tundra buggy and here was one encounter I had with a polar - literally, face to face.  The photo is taken with a 50mm and he was about 2 feet away.  Absolutely stunning.

In Maui, we made our way to the end of the Hana Highway, to the actual town of Hana. We had read about Koki Beach, a red and black sand beach that was slightly hidden. We found the steep trail and made our way down to the unique beach. The shot is what we saw when we looked to the right. It was truly majestic. We feel the shot looks like an oil painting!

This photo was taken as we made our way to the top of Haleakala in Maui. I'm not sure what our elevation was at this point, but we had made it above the clouds. The contrast of the blue sky, white clouds, and brown Earth was breathtaking! The clouds looked so thick and billowy. It looked like you could jump right onto them like a huge mattress! Unforgettable!

This beautiful scene was taken in Maui; off of the famous Hana Highway. This landscape can be seen in the distance at around mile marker 12 on the Hana Highway, however, to get up close and personal, you must exit Hana Highway before mile marker 17. The Ke'anae Peninsula coastline is a feat for the eyes!

  • An Inconvenient Storm An Inconvenient Storm

    • From: biglannie
    • Description:

In my younger days I was mesmerized by photos in text books of Mont Saint Michel, a Gothic-style Benedictine Abbey, built between the 11th and 16th centuries, dedicated to the archangel St Michael, a Wonder of the Western World that was built on a rocky tidal island in Normandy, France.

A short time ago following my retirement I planned a trip to France and of course on the top of my list after visiting the Normandy beaches, was a pilgrimage to Mont Saint Michel as others have done since 708 A.D.

By rental car with impatient fervor I made the trek from the D-Day Beaches. Finally from over ten miles away I could see the famous silhouette of the abbey rising to heaven before me.

I nervously approached the parking area which stood across the road from the Abbey. I jumped out of my car, camera in hand to take my first excited photos. But before the first snap, suddenly from what seemed like from out of no where appeared one of the worst thunder storms of my life. I jumped back into the car and sat camera in hand for what seemed like ages as the wind and rain rocked the car back and forth.

Finally it stopped and I ran like a little kid down the long causeway leading to the island and Mt Saint Michel. I was approximately 30 yards from the entrance gate when another storm broke out. I made a mad dash to the gate but with just a few more yards to go a torrential cold rain suddenly pelted down like bullets in a scene from Saving Private Ryan.

So to make a long story short my visit that I thought about in my dreams for many years and hoped to take wondrous photos of turned out to be a stormy day in Normandy.

Still one of the neatest places I have ever visited. I would love to go back some day and see it with blue skies, birds singing and a bright sun shinny day.

My mom & I trekked to Churchill, Manitiba, Canada to watch the annual polar bear migration as they headed to the rapidly-freezing Hudson Bay in search of seals. It was fantastic to see these animals up close in their natural habitat.

    • From: greenngold1
    • Description:

At first glance I thought this was just another view of a canal on the island of Borano but after looking a little harder I saw this wonderful sidewalk cafe on the left side of the embankment filled with people, many of whom had taken refuge there during the recent rain storm.  They seemed so peaceful sitting in the cafe talking and watching others pass by.  When combined with the colors and reflections of the houses and boats in the waters of the canal I added this image to my collection of memories for this trip.

A great destination for hiking in the U.S. is the North Cascades in Washington State.  One of the prettiest spots we found on a trip there in July 2009 is Hidden Lake in North Cascades National Park.  The trail to Hidden Lake starts just west of the park and climbs up to a fire tower.  This photo is a view of Hidden Lake from just under the fire tower.  Isn't it a gem?

    • Description:

Aside from having a cool name, courtesy of lonely and lusting French trappers, the Grand Tetons are an amazing sight rising thousands of feet over the plains. I visited the Tetons in May 2009 on a whirlwind trip through Idaho and Wyoming. The scenery was fantastic, the only problem was that all the trails were still snow covered - I'll have to come back later in the year next time.
