We were with a small group on our way to visit the active Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica when our guide spotted a pack of Coati on the roadside and pulled over. He described them as half raccoon, half anteater. He called them White-nosed Coatimundi. The mundi part means they will eat virtually anything, hence their attraction to groups of tourists. Interesting little creatures.
Flag Twirlers at the festival of San Giovanni in Forence, Italy. About 150 men, young and old, fathers with sons (teaching them traditions) and royally clad dignitaries assembled only yards away from the spot where the radical Dominican Monk Girolemo Savonarola was burned at the stake in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in 1498 for his preachings, the same spot where he set afire a pyre of priceless art and books a year earlier, the Bonfire of the Vanities. After an opening speech the dignitaries were led into the open doors of the Palazzo Vecchio and their accompaning guards posted. The drummers sharply rolled out their beat and the two competing contrade divided into smaller groups for the first of many colorful, synchronized flag twirling demonstrations. They started their maneuvers slowly, first just spinning the flags by their sides and low above their heads. As the tempo of the drummers increased so did the speed of the performance, twirlers were now racing about the piazza, throwing and catching each others flags in unison.
We went to see the gibbon exhibit at the Animal Discovery Center at the Natural Science Center of Greensboro in North Carolina. The handler was very helpful, explaining to us that the gibbons in the exhibit were very old (one was 39), and that they fed them Ensure (nutrition shakes) in bottles, which they loved. It's easy to see how similar they are to humans, watching them twist off the cap and drink from a water bottle like they had been doing it all their lives.

This video was made in Sept 2009 in London’s Regent’s Park. The occasion, Klezmer in the Park, was a celebration of ‘klezmer’ music. In 19th and 20th century eastern Europe, itinerant musicians wandered from city to city, town to town, shtetl to shtetl, playing/singing their distinctive music. If you’ve ever been to a Jewish wedding, then you’ve heard the sounds of klezmer music. Klezmer in the Park featured seven different bands over the course of an afternoon, during which time the crowd swelled from a few hundred on up. So we stayed to hear only three groups – this group, Shir, was the best of them. I was fairly far from the stage, so I had to use a telephoto setting, and people often passed by right in front of the camera [a Kodak Z1015 IS digital]. I apologize for their intrusion. The original mov file was 239 Mb, and could not be uploaded. So, we did some cropping, which dramatically reduced the file size, along with resolution. I apologize for that as well. However, the sound is fine and the music soars. ENJOY!!
A P.S. You Tube has quite a bit of 'klezmer music' available. So, if you like this brand of music, you can hear more there.
