    • Description:

On my second day on Con Dao, I joined a group of Vietnamese tourists on a tour boat to Bay Canh, one of the outlying islands. I was the only foreigner on the boat and, not surprisingly, was the source of much interest. I learned this man was the oldest in the group, so it was exceedingly to funny to everyone when he got to pose with the lone Western woman. He had a good grip! And yes, I'm getting in the spirit by doing the requisite peace sign/bunny ears that Asians so love to do!

Each time I gave a monkey a banana, he would make a funny, surprised expression by raising his eyebrows and then making eye contact. Anyone know what this means? I'm guessing it's something like, 'Why is this crazy human handing out free bananas? Doesn't she want them for herself?"

Perhaps because it's visited by so many former soldiers, Con Son has some really amazing propaganda posters. They were all over town and I just loved them. I found their graphic design and images so neat to look at--especially in contrast to the town's grey buildings and walls--though I might feel differently if I knew what they said!

I ended up being on the same flight as the group of Vietnamese tourists that had fussed over me on the boat trip (see The old man, the sea, and me). These group shots are VERY popular around here, and I was proud to be invited to join one.

The uninhabited island of Bay Canh--I hung out here and snorkeled for the day. From May to September, it's a nesting ground for hawsbill turtles who climb onto the beach at night and lay their eggs. I didn't get to see this, which gives me a reason to come back!

After spending the day summiting Con Dao's high hills, this beach couldn't have been more welcoming. Like most of the island's shores, there was virtually no one around! Dam Trau beach is on the island's west coast.

We were both a little wary of one another. Could our arms be outstretched any more? After hearing so many stories about snatching people's personal belongings, I'll admit, I don't trust monkeys one bit!! But they are very curious critters to watch.

There are lots of monkeys in Con Dao National Park. These guys hang out an old fruit plantations that;s a stopping point for trekkers, who often bring the monkeys treats. I had lugged a kilo of bananas up a really steep hill for them. I hope they appreciated it!
