We were exploring a dirt road west of Punta Uva Costa Rica when I spotted this majestic feathered specimen perched in a tree.  It is a Common Black Hawk (Buteogallus anthracinus).  This is a big predator almost two feet in length with a 4 ft wing span.  He turned and gave me this what are you lookin' at glare.

    • Description:

This is a Black Chested Jay from the Caribbean slopes of the Talamanca Mountains in southern Costa Rica.  About eight of these guys showed up in a flock wondering what I was up to.  Like any jay, they are curious, furious, and loud.  They were not pleased that I was in their forest and let me know about it.

This handsome fellow probably flew further than we did to get to Costa Rica.  Swainson's Hawks migrate to the Pampas in Argentina from as far north as the plains of northern Alberta, some 14,000 miles away.  He was just sitting on a stone resting when we came upon him.

  • Beach Day Beach Day

    • From: Buqo
    • Description:

Just after noon the power went out.  We did the only rational thing possible and grabbed the last three cold Imperials out of the refrigerator and declared it a beach day.  We walked out to Playa Negra and I put on the wide angle lens to make this shot looking to the east.  Puerto Viejo is about two kilometers down this beach where the land juts out into the Caribbean.  Drink 'em before they get warm...that's our motto.

The shot is looking west along Playa Negra. This beach goes on and on for kilometers and is just gorgeous.  Got an e-mail this morning that said it was snowing back where we live in Nevada.  Last week was rainy but this week it has been paradise on the Caribbean.

This big Squirrel Cuckoo (Piaya cayana) stopped by to join us for morning coffee today.  He is about 20 inches long and seemed to be really interested in what we were doing.  Maybe it was the aroma of the fresh brewed Costa Rican coffee.

This little guy has been coming by every day.  Today he came close enough and sat still long enough for me to make this picture of him.  He is listed as a Scarlet Rumped Tanager (Ramphocelus passerinii).  He has been renamed the Passerini Tanager for those on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica.  They are a real attention grabber as they fly through the trees.

  • Bus Station in Puerto Viejo Bus Station in Puerto Viejo

    • From: Buqo
    • Description:

MaryEllen and our friend Tricia wait to buy a ticket at the bus station in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica.  Puerto Viejo is a 4-1/2 to 5 hour bus ride from San Jose, costs about $8 US, and has 5 departures daily from San Jose and 4 from PV to San Jose.  Local buses run to Limon, Cahuita, Bribri, Sixaola, and Manzanillo on almost an hourly basis.  There a no bathrooms on the bus but there is a pit stop in Limon.  Rental cars are a little spendy and buses provide economic transport to and from all points on the Caribbean coast.  There are also tourist shuttles in vans or minibuses that cost $35 to $40.  Once in Puerto Viejo, you can rent a bicycle, ATV, or golf cart, or rely on one of the many taxis.

A Great Owl Butterfly (Caligo eurilochus) dines on mashed bananas at the Veragua Rainforest research center west of Limon.  This bizarre looking butterfly is one of the largest butterfiles in Costa Rica, spanning about 4 inches in length.  The unusual marking are meant to confuse potential predators  by putting a fierce look to an otherwise fragile creature.

These tidal pools are at Salsa Brava in Puerto Viejo  de Talamanca on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica.  A restaurant sits adjacent to the pools that is a great place to sit, watch the surf and people, and tip a cold Imperial.  It is also one of the few places along the coast where you can watch the sunset over the beach and the highlands to the west.

    • Description:

We went to the Veragua Rainforest just east of Limon, Costa Rica today.  I had always wanted to make a picture of one of those stunning Blue Morpho butterflies.  I learned that this will probably never happen as you seldom see their brillant blue colors unless they happen to be in flight (or is that flutter).  As they land on a leaf or flower, the spectacular underside of their wings exhibits an almost unworldly vision to the observer, just not in blue.  I got to photo my Blue Morpho but not quite how I had imagined it.

    • From: Buqo
    • Description:

We were just past Punta Uva on the road between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo on the southeasternmost Caribbean coast of Costa Rica when were heard this roar in the forest canopy over our head.  I screeched on the brakes, backed up, and got out to see what the source was.  Dozens of Mantled Howler Monkeys were roaring at us at the top of their simian lungs.  All of them were on one side of the road except for this fine fellow who had the deepest baritone of them all.  True to their name, they howled at us, every passing vehicle, and each other.  This was my first sighting of a monkey in the wild.  What a treat!

We went to Finca la Isla today, a sustainable farm with a botanical garden just outside of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, CR.  Forget the close up lens with these amphibians as you will never get close enough.  Most of these poison dart frogs turn their rear ends to you as soon as they see you, and dare you to touch them.  But this little guy was nice enough to pose for this portrait.  The Caribe Sur rocks!

    • Description:

The bridge at Pandora, Costa Rica.  When we saw the name, had to see the town (think Avatar).  Pandora is a ways inland along a beautiful stretch of higway up the Caribbean slopes into the highlands.  Vehicles wait in line to cross this single lane gem of engineering.  Instead of crossing the bridge, we opted for going straight up twenty kilometers of dirt round through some spectacular country.

  • Tropical Treats Tropical Treats

    • From: Buqo
    • Description:

At the end of the self-guided tour of the Finca la Isla botanical garden, you end up back at the reception area.  There you are served a glass of fresh juice while the various farm grown products are discussed and sampled.  Vanilla, cinnamon, fruits, and nuts of all types and tastes are presented along with raw coca and artisan chocolate.  The tour and the tropical treats are all just 5 dollars US per person and includes a greater appreciation of the plants and animals.  It is a moderate hike and can be a little soggy and a lot muddy if it is raining, but is a wonderful experience and great bargin.  Another afternoon well spent in Costa Rica.
