Favorite past times in upper Wisconsin and the upper Michigan Pennisula are spending time on a lake, preferably in a cabin. In the evening, when all of the fishing, boating, and picnicing are done, just spending some quiet time enjoying nature and its beauty are part of the attraction. This is one of those times.

A little stroll down one of the piers of the San Francisco bay area on a warm November day seems just the thing in the late afternoon as the sun begins descending earlier. Lots of people, and dogs, were out enjoying the weather. We remembered it even more fondly after returning to the midwest and seeing snow falling the next day.

The bridge leads to the Royal Mile and has a fantastic story of its own.The greenery and paths you see coming up from the bottom lead to and from the Princes Street Gardens. They are beautiful gardens for taking a relaxing walk and also server to hide the tracks leading into the train station.

A store display window in Oxford England, was really decked out for the queen's 60th Diamond Jubilee celebration. Cutouts of the queen, Prince Harry, and a royal guard drew attention to window. The entire country was decorated like this, with flags, lights, and banners. Evening fireworks and daytime flotillas on the rivers added to the national holiday spirit. It was an especially fun time to be there.

    • Description:

Scottish guards walking along the walls of Edinburgh Castle in Edinburgh Scotland. Their uniforms are the picture of elegance and all of those we saw were fit men that did their units proud. We saw more of them guarding the Scottish Queen's palace. We didn't have the chance to hear any stories about different parts of the uniform but will look forward to finding out some of the more interesting facts that go along with the colorful attire. Well done gentlemen.

    • Description:

After arriving in Windsor by train we exited the train station via a shopping mall and rounded the corner and ran right into our hotel. The hotel's web site stated that the hotel was near Windsor castle but until we checked in, opened the drapes, and looked out the window we didn't know just how close we were. This shot is taken from our hotel room. We weren't sure we would get a better view of anything else by leaving the hotel and walking around, so we sat and stared for a long time. Amazing place.

Rose's Cottage. Another thatched roof attraction located in Cockington England, in the Devon region. I first noticed it when a horse drawn carriage pulled up in front and let out some excited passengers. The front yard is enclosed by a wonderful rock wall with a stone bench on the outside for passers by to sit and admire the view.

Fall in Madison Wisconsin. The leaves are in full color on the first day of October. Some streets are a canopy of color. This street is my favorite because each year it puts on a spectacular show, but it only lasts for a few days.

This bagpiper played his heart out on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh Scotland. He was good too. Of course I think anyone who can make any musical notes on one of those things is good. He was dressed to...well...shrill. His playing and his garments gave his section of the street an authentic touch of Scotland. I threw some money in and stayed for a while and enjoyed.

Edinburgh Scotland has an upper section and a lower section and streets filled with interesting shops connect the two. This photo shows one of the streets that leads the from the lower to upper city as well as displaying the colorful new and charming old architectures of the city. There are plenty of stories to keep a vistiors interest like the ones about the people who used to live under one of the major bridges and got boarded up underneath during the plague era.

Touring the Scotch Museum in Edinurgh Scotland made for an interesting afternoon. It included learning about the types of Scotch Whiskey and the regions they come from. We also toured the Scotch collection of more than 4000 bottles (one of my favorite names was Royal Butt) and participated in a tasting of the different types. It was a very poplular tour and we waited in a fair line to get in. Then we needed a nap.

Low tide offers explorers opportunities to walk where they usually couldn't in Torbay. Corbyn Head is the land extending out into the water in the background it can be found along the coast between Torquay and Paignton England. We stayed in a hotel practically across the street from it. There is a beach along the shore that leads up to it and they fired off fireworks from the end of it for the Queen's Jubilee celebration. Great area for hiking, resting or swimming if you're brave enough.

    • From: rschoeff
    • Description:

All through England fireworks were synchronized in the evening to celebrate, in a united effort, The Queen of England's 60th year in reign. We enjoyed this dispkay off of Corbyn's Head along the southern coast of England. Torquay is the town in the background and you can just barely make out the strings of red, green, and blue lights that lined the streets to emphasize the event. Large and small rivers hosted flotillas composed of boats decorated in english flags and colors. It was wonderful to be there during the celebration. A little later the olympics grabbed the spotlight in England.

    • Description:

My concept of Oxford is a place of immense architectural beauty, a college town with plenty of young people and new ideas, mixed in a large dab of practicality. This photo of a wonderful old doorway, a new door, and the most practical mode of regular transporation in Oxford remind me of my impressions every time. It's just a great place to walk around in and gawk at the buildings and other structures. It's alive with young people. And yet is just such a practical place. I hope to visit again.

  • Mouth of the Dart Mouth of the Dart

    • From: rschoeff
    • Description:

Dartmouth-the city at the mouth of the Dart River. The entire region is lively and full of colorful houses, people, and stories. We took a river tour along the Dart and listened to a very entertaining tour guide. Our trip started out being extraordinary. We wanted to take a train to visit Dartmouth but the only train that comes near is a steam train that arrives at Kingswear, across the river. No bridge connects Kingswear and Dartmouth (though Dartmouth has a train station...go hear the story yourself) and you must take a ferry across. The surrounding area is green and lush and hosts Agatha Christie's house and the Royal Naval Academy looking down on the river from hilltops.

One of the many things I love about the UK is the way residents take pride in and decorate their yards and doorways. While strolling down a residential street in Edinburgh I took so many pictures of beautiful house fronts I lost count. Each one with a different combination of colorful flowers and greenery. This house caught my eye because of the blue and violet flowers and the year above the door.

This is an early morning shot from the Torquay (tor-kee) England boardwalk. The boardwalk extends out into Torbay and attaches to land where you can find plenty of palm trees, wild flowers, rocks walls, and a hill with a complex set of walking ramps leading to hilltop apartments and condos. This area in Devon is known as the 'English Riviera' and is located on the southwestern most part of England. We stayed here for five wonderful days exploring the area.
