    All photos taken from the Hollywood Hills - specifically, the hiking trails in Griffith Park, which is to LA what Central Park is to NYC. However, this park is far above the city, natural, rugged, and spectacular. And it has rattlesnakes.

    Architecture in some shots belongs to the Griffith Observatory, a still-functional historical landmark with an underground astronomy museum. Situated on a canyon ridge, it offers incredible views of the entire LA basin from the mountains to the ocean.

    Photos were taken on an early Sunday morning during a rare opportunity - when a heavy marine layer of low fog covered the city, obscuring nearly everything beyond the hills except for a few peaks and the downtown skyline.

    This photo was taken on March 18, 2009 from the cupola of the Duomo in Florence. My husband and I climbed 460 steps to glimpse a breathtaking view of Florence and the Tuscan hills. The Duomo is the gigantic brick dome of the cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore which is situated in the cultural heart of Florence, and is the city's most recognized architectural marvel. One can walk around the outside of the cupola to catch a 360-degree panoramic view of the city. However, there is only a waist-high railing, and the wind in March can gust up to 40 mph there, so stay clear!
