  • Flying the frugal skies Flying the frugal skies

    • From: marx03
    • Description:

Airfares are going up, in spite of the fact that business and personal air travel is also on the rise. The air industry blames federal regulations and taxation for the increases, and recently stood up to Congress to say "enough." In the meantime, frugal vacationers can find big savings by shopping smart and thinking outside of the box. Article source: get additional information on each of our webpage!

      Air fare on the rise

Bjorn Hanson is the divisional dean of the Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Management at New York University who points out that travel costs decreased considerably in 2007. In 2010, they started coming back again and are even expected to rise four to six percent this year.

The Airfares are increasing again. In the light of escalating air fare, many travelers are getting intelligent about how they plan their trips. By thinking outside of the package deal-box, combining destinations and taking advantage of sales and perks, many travelers are flying while nurturing their pocketbooks. However, finding these savings does require an excellent deal of cyber-legwork.

      The one-way circumstance

The Agency of Transportation Statistics claims that, in 2011, one-third of all airline vacationers eschewed round-trip tickets and pre-packaged itineraries in favor of their own custom plans. In 2002, only 19 percent of vacationers used non-traditional itineraries.

      Fare limitations

Getting the very best deal requires understanding of restricted and unrestricted fares. Unrestricted costs give an excellent deal of flexibility, but cost substantially more. If last minute changes are a big possibility, it might be worth the additional cost to save big fees.

With restricted costs, you usually are either not allowed to terminate or change a flight or you have to pay a big fee to restrict or terminate the flight. That means you need to get the flight you want whenever you want it. The issue with that is that you typically have to book the flights well in advance to get the right price. In 2011, according to the Motley Fool, American Airlines charged almost $500,000 in charges to change or get rid of reservations. Delta charged $766,000. Alaskan Airlines, at the bottom of the scale, charged nearly $11,000.

Not an option to change charges

Congress heard from the airline industry on Thursday that fought back saying that it is impossible for businesses to get on top and help get out of the recession if they are being taxed too much. Federal regulators have been increasing regulation and taxation a ton on airlines that have become a necessity. The North American VP of the International Air Transport Association is Douglas Lavin. He said:

"We need government to stop looking at us as a cash cow and look at us as an economic engine ... We will be very aggressive here in getting this message out to regulators and members of Congress."

The strong words followed a May 22 Senate Appropriations subcommittee vote to raise the security fee on airfare to $5 per ticket. That move was opposed by House Republicans.

Airplane_SkyscannerOneTravel.com “offers travel deals for today's internet savvy user, allowing users to book discounted flights, hotels, vacation packages, and activities with the ease of today's high speed internet.”

I booked flights from Los Angeles to Washington, DC via OneTravel.com, and I found the site to be easily navigable as well as cheaper than most other airline search engines. One cool feature about the travel site is that you can search for cheap tickets by destination or by airline:

      Example of Miami destination search:

      http://www.onetravel.com/cheap-flights/miami-mia-florida-deals

Example of AirTran airline destination search:

      http://www.onetravel.com/travel/airlines/airtranairways-fl.html

Sometimes after I book my flights, I continue to search other deals across the web to see if I indeed found the cheapest rate. On OneTravel.com, they have a “Low Fare Promise”, where if you find a lower fare on OneTravel or another search engine within 4 hours, they will credit you the difference! If you find a lower fare in 4-24 hours after booking, they will send you a $50 coupon for a future booking on OneTravel.com.

OneTravel.com offers some exciting and great deals on all inclusive holiday packages:

  • Skyscanner: An Easy & Painless Skyscanner: An Easy & Painless Airfare Search!

    • From: ajjordan2
    • Description:

SkyscannerI stumbled across a hidden gem while looking to book my upcoming holiday flights. Perhaps the holidays are the most nerve-wracking time to purchase airfare, but thanks to Skyscanner, it made the process easy and painless.

Skyscanner.net is a global travel search site that is unique in that it allows you to compare millions of flights over a thousand airlines, and find the cheapest flights available. The process is easy breezy, as you ultimately book your flight directly with the airline, and not through Skyscanner. You can also look online over specific months or the entire year to find the best rates.

Thankfully, Skyscanner not only browses the major airlines, but they search with the budget airlines within each country as well. This is really useful for when I travel within Europe, and want to use a budget airline to go from one country to the next.

They also offer multi bookings or ‘non-guaranteed transfers’, where you can find the cheapest options to fly with different airlines for each leg of your trip. Also, if you are in indecision about where you want to travel, you can select a city you want to fly out of and put “everywhere” in the destination box. They will show you the cheapest destinations available!

Las Vegas via SkyscannerAnother  cool feature on the site is the “Explore” page, which allows you to view cheap flights to popular destinations in not only the United States, but in most continents of the world. For example, clicking on “Cheap Flights to Las Vegas” will show deals from popular cities such as Los Angeles, Denver, Dallas, and Oakland.

Clicking on “Cheap Flights to Paris” will yield results from cities such as New York, Detroit, Chicago, and many others.

Outside of airfare, Skyscanner also allows you to search for deals in rental cars, hotels, holidays and insurance. The website is very popular as they have over 25 million visitors every month. Make sure you download the Skyscanner app on your smart phone and start searching today!
