Driving a narrow road in Ireland looking for the next passage tomb.
Sick and tired of Interstate 40 between Flagstaff and Kingman? Take the Route 66 exit and head to Seligman, a trip back in time but with expresso and Internet access. The highway continues on to Kingman and is a beautiful two lane highway that is a fun drive and desolate and empty compared to the Interstate. And they have resurrected the old Burma Shave signs along stretches of the "Mother Road" as it is known. Depending on how many stops you make along the way, Route 66 will increase your travel time west by only an hour or two, well worth the time.
Wiliams, Arizona is a hoot! Situated at the foot of Bill Wiliams Mountain, this old Route 66 city (by southwestern standards) is a gateway to the Grand Canyon via railcar or automobile. The main drag is one long one-way U-shaped street that offers a wide variety of restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. Restoration of old gas stations like this one, diners, and motels are making the most of the town's highway and railroad heritage. All under a beautiful Arizona sky.
This is the border crossing on an alpine road from Vellach, Austria to Solcava, Slovenia. The border used to separate Yugoslavia from Austria but has been abandoned after Slovene independence and entrace into the European Union.
On our way up the foothills of the Komniski Alps, we turned off on some dirt roads to walk in the forest, look for mushrooms, and enjoy the scenery. We took this dirt road as far as we could until it was gated. The Alps are simply stunning.
On our second day in Ljubljana, the lure of the Alps was too much and we headed up rural highways through the Slovene country side in our Czech made 4-speed Skoda with Croatian plates. We crossed into the part of Austria that forms a small salient into Slovenian on this tiwisty mountain road. The Komnisko Alps are in the background. What a fabulous drive!

Highway 1, Between Pescadero, CA and San Francisco, CA, September 2007
Leaving San Jose, my husband and I rolled down the sunroof, passed a beautiful sequoia park and and picked up Highway 1 in the tiny town of Pescadero, where we enjoyed fresh goat cheese from a local dairy, and warm artichoke-stuffed garlic bread from Arcangeli Grocery. We followed the coastline north back to SF, catching the sunset and some giant pumpkins along the way.

Betty's Bay, South Africa, along the Garden Route between Capetown and hermanus. There are thousands of nesting penguins on the rocks and beach, with crashing surf.
Seagulls in this charming whale-watching town along the Garden Route. We saw whales leaping out of the water, but didn't mange to capture a picture.
