  • Uffizi View

    • From: rschoeff
    • Description:

This is a view from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence Italy.  Below is the Uffizi mall.  There are often some very interesting street performers in the mall area. The tower in the center belongs to the Palazzo Vecchio.  Slightly to the left and in the distance you see the dome of the Florence Duomo.  If you like art, you will love the Uffizi.  We only spent a day going through it and were very rushed.  It could easily take a week to thoroughly enjoy it.  I believe this section of Florence is or was at one time considered to be the heart of Florence.

  • Baptistry Bronze Panel

    • From: rschoeff
    • Description:

This one of the of the 28 bronze panels that decorates the doors of the Florence Baptistry that resides in the Piazza del Duomo in Florence Italy.  This panel is the Joshua panel and is located on the Gates of Paradise doors.  The ten panels of the Gates of Paradise were created in 1425 and took 27 years to build.  The panel in the picture is a copy of the original which were replaced in 1990 due to over 500 years of environmental damage.  The details of the panels and the surrounding figures iare amazing.  Some of the original panels were sent on tour in 2007 & 2008 and have since returned to Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.  If you ever get a chance to see them, it will be well worth your time.  One of the few copies ever made of some of the panels reside in Grace Cathedral in San Fransisco.  If you look carefully you can see the soot that collects on all parts of the baptistry. Little wonder that the Piazza del Duomo has been closed to motor traffic.

  • Nuns at Greek Temple, Paestum,

    • From: kabell4
    • Description:

We were in Paestum, Italy visiting the three Greek Temples there.  I had added Paestum to our itinerary since I didn't think I'd make it to Greece for quite some time, and here was a chance to see the best preserved Greek ruins outside of Greece.  It struck me funny that a group of nuns were visiting a place of ancient pagan religious rites.  Of course, I did not ask what religion they were, so maybe it was an appropriate stop on their tour.  I took the photo on September 25, 2004 during our three week dream trip to Italy.

  • Venice Houses

    • From: rschoeff
    • Description:

As we toured Venice we came across a group of people, students possibly, who were sitting in this small piazza and painting these houses.  The more I looked at the houses the more reasons I saw for capturing the scene.  The colors, the architecture, the flowers, the downspout fixtures all witnessed to Venice's beauty.  I didn't stay around long enough to see the finished watercolors but how could they be bad?

  • Boat near Crooked Bridge, Veni

    • From: kabell4
    • Description:

We were about to exit one of the larger squares in Venice, Italy when we noticed an artist selling his paintings. We wanted to buy one as a souvenir of our visit. My husband wanted to get a painting of the Grand Canal, but that seemed too obviously touristy to me.  My favorite part of Venice wasn't traveling down the Grand Canal or walking through St. Mark's Square, but rather wandering the tiny little calles throughout the city.  The artist had a painting that was cozy and intimate, which I loved right away.  We asked the artist if the scene was of a real place in the city.  He said yes, it is the Crooked Bridge (a unique bridge in Venice), and marked it on our map.  We bought the painting and set off to find the Crooked Bridge.  On the way there, we happened upon a little shop selling carnivale masks of just the type for which we had been looking.  Happy with our purchases, we continued on our way, eventually arriving at the Crooked Bridge.  I went to the other side (the same perspective as in the painting) and took the picture.  The painting hangs in our living room; it brings me back to Venice each time I look at it.  I took the photo on October 4, 2004 during our three week dream trip to Italy (I'm still reliving the memories).

  • Smart Car in Rome, Italy

    • From: kabell4
    • Description:

We had just arrived at our rental in Rome, Italy.  The villa had been split into two parts - the owners lived in one part, and the other part was the rental.  I had never seen a Smart Car before.  I thought it was funny how the Smart Car fit completely within the archway of the villa, with room to spare.  It really illustrated just how different Italy is from the United States.  In the U.S., we have wide open spaces, wide freeways, and wide cars.  Italy was quite different from that, with its narrow streets and tiny cars.  This shows why people should travel - to get a sense that not every place is the same as what you know, experience every day, and just take for granted that everyone lives the same way as you do.  This villa was across the street from the Circus Maximus and the Palatine Hill.  I loved to sit relaxing on the terrace enjoying the view of the Palatine Hill ruins.  I took the photo on September 19, 2004 during our three week dream trip to Italy.

  • Spanish Steps

    • From: allaffordtravel
    • Description:

The Spanish Steps, or in Italian, Scalinata della Trinita dei Monti, start at the Piazza di Spagna and climb to the Trinita dei Monti church. These steps have been the subject of countless photographs, and travel posters. Conceived as a means to climb from the plaza to the church, these steps have become synonymous with Rome. The plaza contains the fabulous Barcaccia Fountain.

Visit the plaza, visit the steps, visit the church, and spend some time people watching. If you are fortunate enough to visit while the steps are decked out with flowers, you will truly see an incredible sight.

  • Trevi Fountain

    • From: allaffordtravel
    • Description:

The Fontana di Trevi or Trevi Fountain is the center piece to of the small Trevi square, at the intersection of Via del Lavatore and Via della Stamparia. We “stumbled” on the fountain on our walk from the Piazza Barberini and its famed Fontana del Tritone. This is the joy of Rome. Walking down side streets and exploring the ancient city; especially if it’s your first time in the city.

Because of it fame and beauty, this small square can be jammed packed with tourists. But don’t let that stop you from going. Squeeze in on the steps and spend time gazing at a true wonder. Enjoy watching the people too. The fountain area draws a diverse crowd of people.

Before you leave you must perform one ritual. With you back to the fountain, toss a coin over your shoulder. According to legend, this assures your return to Rome. We have been back five times.

  • Window Box San Gimignano, Ital

    • From: kabell4
    • Description:

This window was just off the main square in San Gimignano, Italy.  The flower boxes really said "Italy" to me. The only thing missing was some laundry hanging out of the window.  The photo was taken October 1, 2004 when we were on our three week dream trip to Italy.  I added San Gimingnano to our list of places to visit since I wanted to see the medieval skyscrapers.  I was not disappointed.
