    • Description:
After catching a flight to Luang Prabang we spent the first day finding an agent to trek with the following day and in the evening we headed out to the night market to scoff our faces before our trek.

      Trek Luang Prabang

We set off on a bumpy and dusty road in the back of a van with two other men (Tony from Switzerland and Migon from Argintina). We also had two local guides, Nick and Tim. Two hours later we arrived at the start of our adventure! We were told to carry as much water as we could as it had to last us two days as the village we were staying in didn't have any drinking water. We squeezed as much as we could (10 litres between us) into our small rucksacks and headed off across a bridge and up a steep hill. The trek was up hill for the first two and half hours with no shade in the mid day sun!

      Trek Luang Prabang

We had drank quite a lot of our water at this point and decided that we had best start rationing if it was going to last the two days.
      The start...The start...

The start...made our first stop at a Hmong village   consiting of 100 or so people. We visited the school within the village which had lots of children and only one teacher. We bought writing books and pencils at the market the previous day to give to any children we saw whilst trekking, so we donated the majority to the school. We stayed for a while helping the children and listening to them sing songs. Although our time their was short, It was one of the things we enjoyed the most. After that it was back to the trekking and 6 and half hours in total in the blazing sun we arrived at our Kamoot village,, hurray, very thirsty and absolutley knackered!
The village was very poor but the people were really friendly. We were staying with the chief of the village and his family and they made us feel very welcome in their home. We were told each family in the village had roughly eight children, babies everywhere :0). We were then shown to our room (4 of us in a bed) very cosy! We were told that we could rest untill dinner so in desperate need of a clean Local women putting us to shame.Local women putting us to shame.

      Trekking Luang Prabang

Local women putting us to shame.we headed to the shower/ pots and pans washing/ animal watering and bathing area. There was a bit of a que for the hose pipe in the middle of the village. But everyone quite happily sat watching the other get naked and have a scrub down. It was eventualy our turn although Julian opted to keep his pants on I decided I didnt smell that bad after all :-)
      Trekking Luang Prabang

We played with the children in the village and then were invite in for dinner, sticky rice and soup. Lots of the kids had gathered around at this point waiting till we finished eating so we could play games and sing songs together. Julian broke into song and statrted with "Old Macdonald" whilst I followed with ''Head shoulders knees and toes'', Julian then went on to show them how to play thumb wars and a hand slapping game, we had a great night.
The following morning we were up at 5am to the sounds of the animals and the men of the village getting ready to hunt or farm in the fields. After an early breakfast we had started the trek by 8am. We walked mainly through jungle.
We'd pretty much ran out of water after another 2 hours of walking but luckily enough we had reached the end of our trek. We had stopped for lunch at the river, where we had a cool off and caught a boat to our pick up point. An hour or so waiting for the bus we were back on the dusty road to our hostel.
      Hope your well,

  • ACROSS NORTHERN VIETNAM ON TWO ACROSS NORTHERN VIETNAM ON TWO WHEELS

    • From: acitvetraveasia
    • Description:
      By David Atkinson
      Motorbiking North Vietnam
Traveling around Vietnam by motorbike, seeing breathtaking landscapes, beautiful mountain passes, interesting historical relics, colorful, friendly and happy people…makes you love Vietnam more and gives us extremely special feeling.
I love the thrill of the open road. Shades on, foot to the floor and cruising through alien landscapes with the stereo cranked right up.
But Vietnam was just about the last place I expected to find myself on a road trip. Self-drive isn’t really an option here.
And, as for the State-approved backpacker bus trips, well, let’s just say that rubbing knees with the tie-dye clad hordes and eating in the tourist restaurant, where the bus driver always collects his kickback, isn’t my scene.
      Easy rider
It sounded perfect. A way to get my engine running and get out on the highway while staying off-the-beaten-track and seeing the real Vietnam.
      Road to Northern Vietnam
Activetravel Asia is one of the Indochina's leading adventure travel companies. They offer a wide selection of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia adventure tours, including hiking and trekking, biking, motorcycling, overland touring and family travel packages. ATA’s packages and tailor-made private itineraries take you through exotic destinations to really experience the culture, history and nature of Asia.  They have made hundreds of trips into the backwaters of the far north, building up a comprehensive motorbike guide to northern Vietnam.
“The bikes are old 50’s designs straight out of Belarussia. They’re the backbone of the country and used by everyone to haul goods around,”
“They don’t go very fast, use a lot of petrol and billow out a lot of smoke, but they’ll get you anywhere,” he adds.
“Besides, they’re very easy to fix. If you’ve got a stick and a rock you can fix a Minsk.”
      Cruise control
With the sun in our faces, we join the highway near Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport and start the slow climb northwards. As we progress at a steady 35km/h, overtaking lumbering trucks soon gives way to overtaking lumbering water buffalo who eye suspiciously as we file past the paddy fields.
We stop for dinner that night in Tuyen Quang. It’s a dusty one-ass town dominated by trucker rest stops and so-called bia om or ‘cuddle beer’ outlets where the town’s two attractions make for natural bedfellows.
As we settle down for the night in the shabby state-owned hotel, one of my fellow easy riders, Casey McCarthy from Texas, tells me why she has chosen a severe buttock buffing on a motorbike in the rain for her holiday.
“I’d never seen a Minsk before Vietnam and, although it’s ancient technology, it’s a very easy ride,” she says. “I guess I just wanted to get away from those cattle-truck bus trips and a bike trip is the best way to see the countryside as you decide where and when you want to go.”
The next day we’re up with the light and, after a hearty bowl of Vietnamese pho bo(a rice noodle soup with strips of beef), we’re back in the saddle and on the road for Ha Giang.
As we stop for petrol at what looks like a roadside chemistry set, I ask Digby what kind of people are attracted to the idea of driving around rural Vietnam on a piece of Russian war-era machinery.
“Half are motorbike riders back home or people with some previous experience but not all. I’d never ridden a bike until I came to Vietnam,” he explains, taking a little bottle of engine oil and mixing it with petrol.
“Drive bikes and you will crash but drive slow enough and you’ll be OK,” he adds, handing over a dollar for two litres. “If we go over, we’ll just slide – unless we hit something. But it’s nothing like driving at 130km back home when you get washed up off the road”.
      Alien invasion
      Hagiang province, Vietnam
The last 50km to Ha Giang is made up of winding country lanes. It’s a drive not best experienced at dusk when huge trucks with dazzling headlights tear around blind corners with scant regard for approaching fellow truckers, let alone a bunch of foreigners on motorbikes in dayglo jackets.
As we make the final approach, it feels like entering a long-forgotten Wild West outpost. The locals stare at us like aliens just beamed down from another planet but Digby is used to it.
“I regularly go to places where only a handful of strangers have ever been before. Just two weeks ago, I took a tour to a place where only three foreigners had ever visited before the new road was built,” he smiles.
“Just as I was thinking that I’d been everywhere possible, the Vietnamese Government has launched a programme to build roads to each commune so a there’s now a whole bunch of new roads to explore,” he adds.
“That’s why I do this. It isn’t so much a tour as a road trip where the guide is having as much fun as the customers.”

Different Sapa - Different Trek: This trip gives you the best Sapa has to offer but not in the normal way. The traditional treks start in Sapa and finish back in Sapa. This special trek starts in Ben Den and finishes in Sapa. The trek is tougher but not less enjoyable since you trek through the hills and valleys of the Sapa region, discovering several different minorities along the way. You will experience overnight accommodation in the hospitable villages of Dzay, Tay and Dzao ethnic minorities. • Beautiful Xishuangbannan in Yu Beautiful Xishuangbannan in Yunan Province China.

    • From: x123456
    • Description:

Xishuangbanna, an autonomous prefecture of the Dai ethnic group which covers an area of 20 thousand square kilometers borders on Laos, Burma, Thailand, and Vietnam, located in the south of Yunnan Province in the People's Republic of China. Its one of the well-known tourist cities in China where the Water-Sprinkling Festival is held each year in the middle of April, famous for natural landscapes of tropical rainforests and minority folk-customs. Many of tourists from around the world visit here every year, especially in the boom season of tourism. If you like, you can go visit Xishuangbannan anytime in a year, since the weather temperature there keeps averagely 16, and only 28 even when its very hot in summer. Its a sunshine place where it never snow.

Rubbers, tea leaves, sugarcane, spices, tropical fruits and some other special local products are all produced in Xishuangbanna, and also there are some developed scenic spots, such as Primeval Forest Park, Wild Elephant Valley, Botanical Garden, tropical rainforests and so on. It is one of the scenic areas and also an important tourist development zone with abundant tourism resources. As you enter Xishuangbannan, you will feel as if you are in a green world where primeval forests, rubber plantation gardens and orchards all come into your sight.

The Peacock Lake which is surrounded by lakes around it looks as clean as a mirror, covering an area of 18700 square meters. It was developed as a park in 1977 where there are pavilions, exotic flowers, peacocks, pythons, foxes, wild boars, moneys, thrush birds, and some other endangered animals. And there is a waterside pavilion in the middle of the clean rippled lake, on which Pattra leaves, coconut trees, areca-nut trees and oil palm trees are all reflected. What’s more, visitors are allowed to enjoy scenery by boat on the lake.

The Wild Elephant Valley of Xishuangbannan is situated in a natural preservation area in the north of Jinghong where there is a vast tropical rainforest that makes it possible for tropical plants to grow and wild animals like Asia elephants to live. There are only 300 Asia elephants in total now. They often haunt as a group at rivers, dense forests, or near people’s residences to hunt for food and water, or to take a walk. On the other hand, a number of tourists from the world are attracted by the landscapes of the tropical rainforest and wild Asia elephants.

  • Vietnam is home to some of the Vietnam is home to some of the best spots in the world for adventure travel

    • From: acitvetraveasia
    • Description:

Imagine a country where the major cities are dynamic but not polluted, the people are genuinely friendly and the rural areas are still unspoilt?  Vietnam with unique climate, fascinating history, stunning coastal getaways, majestic mountains and tempting food is definitely the country for you !

Your first stop is Ha Noi, the city with the history of roughly 1,000 years. Must see destination is the Old Quarter which eventually retains most of its ancient charm since French colonial period. Let’s enjoy the quite time with a cup of Vietnamese iced coffee in a very unique way which is served on the balcony of the coffee shop and be prepared for up-coming challenge!

Leaving the major city, cycling routes across the Karst plateau of Ha Giang will amazed you. The route is very tough and tricky, and the mountain pathways are almost vertical in places. The landscape and natural conditions across the 1,600m above sea level area offer the perfect conditions for memorable experiences.

Different from classical travelling tour, you will experience it in an untypical way. Local cuisine will astonish you! Ethnic men are also willing to teach you cooking their special food. As for accommodation, you will surely love to stay with a local family on their colorful tribes. To pass through place to place, you are going to do as a local person on your own foot or bikes. Be reminded that the area’s landscape is Karst plateau with numerous limestone mountains!

Remote track can’t pass through mountains so that you will have to cross 45-km- pathway to Viet Nam yourselves by cycling. With the emergency backup for water, lunch and first-aid, you will ride through secluded valleys, verdant hills, hidden waterfall and switchbacks, which flows seamlessly into some sinuous riverside single track making for fantastic riding. Eventually emerge onto rough tarmac and climb before finally dropping down again to the hot springs of Viet Nam, where you can ease our aching muscles.

      Not for everyone, not forever

From the madness of Hanoi to the untamed beauty of Ha Giang -- each of our destinations offered a unique glimpse into Vietnamese culture. It's not for everyone, but for those willing to brave the unknown, the country is ripe with untapped adventures.

Hurry though. Sprawling resorts are popping up, and the booming tourism business has many young people learning how to cater to the nuances of Western culture more often than celebrating their own. Vietnam is a country on the cusp. In another decade, it may be a cookie-cutter tourist oasis. But for now, the spirit of Vietnam remains.

    • Description:

When the travel bug bites, it can be hard to shake off and those with a nose for adventure will find that the call of the wild can sometimes be hard to resist. But if the thought of making a solo trip into the unknown is a little daunting, it may well be worth checking out group adventure trips.

Adventure Tours for All Types of Traveller

Whatever your experience and fitness level, there's bound to be an adventure tour to suit your interests and abilities. Should you have a head for heights and a decent amount of climbing experience, you may want to team up with others of a similar skill set to tackle super-challenging adventures such as climbing France's mammoth Mont Blanc mountain, or trekking across the high passes of Everest. There are many adventure tours out there aimed at delivering a serious challenge and while these trips are not for the faint of heart, they are perfect for those who like their trips to come with a hefty dose of adrenaline. Those who like to take things at a slightly more gentle pace needn't give up on the idea of adventure travel, however. Whether you are a budding wildlife photographer keen to snap some close ups of lions, wildebeest and cheetahs on the African plains, or a yoga lover looking to slow things down on a yoga retreat in beautiful surroundings, there are group adventure trips that will be right up your street. Adventure travel needn't mean bungee jumping from canyon-spanning bridges or making death-defying ascents up sheer rock faces (although those who enjoy such white knuckle pursuits are sure to find an adventure tour that fits the bill...) - there are 'Discovery' wildlife tours to suit those who long to see big cats, gorillas and other magnificent creatures in the wild; cycling tours that allow groups of cyclists to travel through the beautiful Andalucian countryside or into farther-flung destinations such as Laos and Vietnam and cultural adventures that take in world famous sights such as the magnificent Machu Picchu Inca settlement in Peru, or China's legendary terracotta warriors. Tours of famous wine regions are also hugely popular and provide an opportunity to increase knowledge and understanding of the world if wine while taking in some breathtaking scenery.

Group Adventure Travel to Suit Your Style and Budget

Group adventure tours are a great way to overcome fears about taking solo strides into the great unknown and are a good way to meet new people with similar interests and travel styles.
Groups are generally no larger than 16, giving travellers a chance to get to know plenty of other travellers without being overwhelmed by huge numbers of people.

Group travel experiences may range in time scale from a couple of days to a month or more and can be as simple or as luxurious an experience as you choose. Those who are looking for a slice of adventure but who don't want to miss out on the finer things in life can choose from a range of Premium breaks, whereby travellers head off on overseas adventures in comfort and style, travelling in luxury and staying at top-end lodgings. For many adventure travellers, however, part of the appeal lies in getting 'back to basics' and being self-sufficient in challenging conditions. Whatever you are looking for in your group adventure trip, there is bound to be an option to suit your interests, skills, budget and travel style.

  • 10 things to do in Luang Praba 10 things to do in Luang Prabang, Laos

    • From: acitvetraveasia
    • Description:

Luang Prabang in Laos is one of the most visit places in Asia before it turns into another common tourist place. On my visit there, I had a chance to explore and experience the best of Luang Prabang which is also an UNESCO World Heritage Site, so here are 10 things you can do in Luang Prabang in no particular order.

      1. Luang Prabang Town in General

Explore this beautiful and well maintained town by foot to see the amazing  heritage buildings in traditional Lao and Dutch designs which take you back in history. Hotels, restaurants, cafes and guesthouses utilize these buildings for their businesses around Luang Prabang Town and one can easily do all of this by foot. There are absolutely no modern buildings or anything above 2 floors in this unique town.

      Wats in Laos

      2. Pak Ou Caves

Or simply known as the Buddha Caves, this is a must-visit for all travelers as the 25 kilometer scenic river journey will be one to remember. Seeing everyday life along the great Mekong River on route to the caves is something special here. At the Pak Ou Caves, thousands of Buddha statues are placed inside the caves which is an amazing sight. Entrance fees are separate here.

      Pak ou Caves

      3. Luang Prabang Markets

There are 2-3 markets around Luang Prabang town but the most popular would be the daily night market which is another must-visit for everyone. Unlike the common markets we are used too, the Luang Prabang Night Market is filled with lots of craft and silverware. This is also your best place to get souvenirs. Alternatively, there is the Hmong Market in the day which is in town where you can also get some decent souvenirs too. For art lovers, do check out some of the local paintings sold around town.

      4. Eat local Lao Food

Lao Food in Luang Prabang is relatively safe for everyone's consumption. Try the local baguettes that are sold around town. Tasty and filling for a very decent price. Make sure you get it with the local Lao Coffee which is reputed to be one of the best in the world. Try various local Lao restaurants along the Mekong River roadside. For some fusion of French and Lao, try the upmarket L'Elephant Restaurant in town.

      5. Whisky Village

Known as Ban Xang Hai, this Lao village is on route to Pak Ou Caves where boats make a 30 minute stop here. You can also visit this interesting craft village via road from Luang Prabang town. Highlights here are the local whiskey or Lao Lao where all sorts of snakes, insects and bugs are fermented and mixed with the whiskey and sold in various shaped bottles. Lao Silk is also woven live in front of you by the locals. You can also buy fabrics and other crafts here.

      6. Phu Si Hill

Also known as Chomsy Hill or Mount Phousi, this easy to climb hill serves as one of the best spots in Luang Prabang to catch the amazing sunsets or view the entire city. A temple is also located up top while there are two ways of getting up here. One from the main street in town while the other is a trail behind the Ethnic Museum in town. Best visited in the evenings just before sundown and there is a minimal entrance fee.

      7. Temples and Wats

There are 30 or more Temples or Wats located around Luang Prabang Town so you can easily visit any of them by foot. The most popular of them would be Wat Mai which is on the main street of town where it was recently refurbished.A walk around town will also take you to various other temples and Wats there. Check out some of the temples with schools for the younger monks where they learn woodwork, painting and also English.

      8. Tad Sae Waterfalls

For the nature explorers, various tours or trips are offered to this beautiful waterfall which is located in a park and about 13 kilometers from town. There is an entrance fee of KIP 8,000 into the park where restaurants and facilities are available. The best time to visit the waterfalls is after the rainy season. During the dry season, the waterfall often has not much water so you may be disappointed.

      9.  Wat Xieng Thong

The Golden City Temple probably one of the oldest and most important temple in Luang Prabang which was built in 1560. Entry fee of KIP 5,000 (US$0.50) into the temple grounds where you see fascinating architecture here. Check out the detailed work on the main temple structure while various wall paintings have been restored to look amazingly beautiful.

      Wat Xieng Thong

      10. Elephant Riding and Trekking or Elephant Village

The Elephant Park Project Area is located about 15 km out of town and in the middle of a wonderful mountainous surrounding. Easy half day trekking (about 3-4 hours) will lead you out into a local Khammu village where you get an insight in every day life and culture of this ethnic minority.
