  • Earthshine Mountain Lodge Earthshine Mountain Lodge

    • Description:

So!  The place is called Earthshine Mountain Lodge.  It is located just about an 40 minute drive from Asheville, NC in the famed Lade Toxaway area.  The drive there is already a wonderful event whether you come South from Asheville or the longer drive North from Atlanta.  As one drives through the mountains and switch from pleasant farmlands to small towns and back again, you get the feeling of 'coming home again'.

As you actually approach Earthshine (11 miles past Brevard, NC, voted one of the coolest small towns in America) the trees start getting taller, the roads windier, until you reach the driveway.  It almost looks like a green tunnel framed by Poplars and Maples.  Driving up the trees give way to a large open space occupied by a large pond and several small buildings.  I come to know this place well as many of the staff-guided activites take place  here from catfishing to the Pioneer Hertiage Festival (there is an actual 150 year old cabin on the far side of the pond and separate blacksmithing shop where pioneer activites take place).  There is also a cable strung over the pond that i come to know is the last stage of the famed Flight Thru the Treetops Canopy Tour.

But, I digress.  On up the driveway i go until i reach the top where stands the main lodge.  It is a 2 story structure made of hand hewn cedar logs and seems to fit the location perfectly.  About 300 feet away is a separate cottage that is sheltered by Chestnut trees.

Since we were staying in the main lodge we headed to the front door and up to the office.  There were several folks in there and all of them greeted us with friendly and enthusiastic smiles.  Check-in was easy, we showed up, they put a check mark on a card, and then we were showed to our room.  On the way we were given a quick tour and explanation of where things were, how to sign up for activities, when things happen etc.  When we reached our room we were greeted by a lovely sight.  The room was in two levels the bottom level was dominated by a huge bed, and next to it was a small set of stairs that led up into an open loft.  In the loft was a couple of twin beds and a door that led to the balcony.

The staff member left us then so we could settle in and we discovered a plate of cookes (fresh-baked) laid out so we snacked and settled.  After we had gotten cofortable we explored.  The property was beautiful.  25 acres of open pasture and another 60 of forest, we were able to hike and and wander and feel like we were the only ones around.  That afternoon we spent on the climbing wall, visiting the animals and that evening, hearing stories around the campfire.

The next morning, after a excellant breakfast, we sent the younger kids (under 10) down to do the Pioneer Morning and the rest of us went out on the canopy tour.  Zipping through the trees was an incredible sensation and after it was over (about 2 hours for the whole thing with 15 people) we were able to join the tail end of the pioneer experience.

That led all the way to lunch, then after that we did the High Ropes Course while the younger crowd did the Creek Hike (right up the middle of the creek) followed by gem mining.  We fed the animals again afternoon, then listend to live musice in the evening.

We had to end our trip that next day and head home, even though there numerous activities that we didn't get to do yet, so our next trip out will be more than just 2 nights!  We can't wait to do the Turtle Tracking, or the Adventure Course, and all the Guided Hikes.

Thank you Earthshine, for a great Experience.
