Friday Night Date at Cirque du Friday Night Date at Cirque du Soleil’s “Iris”
- From: ajjordan2
-
Description:
Who knew the Cirque du Soleil would make an awesome Friday night date night? I decided to catch the Los Angeles resident Cirque du Soleil performance, Iris...
What first strikes you is the moment of walking into the actual theatre. If you’ve never been to the Dolby theatre, you will appreciate the intimacy of the venue, as well as the acoustics (being Dolby surround sound, of course). The orchestra were positioned not in the center of the theatre, but in various boxes on the sides of the venue, adorned in thematic costumes. The 9,600 sq ft. stage gives you a perfect up close and personal feel of connecting with the performers. It’s as if the acrobatics are happening all around of you instead of just in front of you.
The theme of Iris is “A Journey Through Cinema”. The director, Jean Rabasse “wanted to express a love, not just of cinema, but of the whole process of film-making, from the technicians to the sound stage, to the nuts and bolts of the machinery and equipment”. What was interesting about the show was that there were no direct references to specific films, actors, or directors, but a universal, worldwide approach to filmmaking. The costumes were as with most Cirque du Soleil performances, colorful, vintage, appropriate and authentic to the different time periods portrayed throughout the show.
After living in LA for some time, it tickled me to witness the actors connecting so well with the LA theatre-goers. There were comical quips about being “Hollywood” and “So LA”. The show flowed extremely well, with tons of acrobatics and stunts during every scene to keep you riveted, with continuity at all times to the theme of cinema. For example, there were gymnasts that exhibited mind-boggling twists and turns with their bodies that will have you wondering how it was physically possible. There are superb dancers and tricky flying stunts; a good portion of the show will have you looking straight up or sideways, or in multi-directions almost at the same time. With Hollywood being the hub of American entertainment, this performance had a lot to live up to, but the show was outstanding, and completely surpasses your expectations for a theatre performance. This is a show to go see now; if not for a date, then it should be enjoyed with friends or family.
