Vacation Itinerary - Puerto R Vacation Itinerary - Puerto Rico
- From: travowl
-
Description:
Dear Diary,
The awesomeness that is 'US' :P
EEEEEEEEE!! I am super excited!! Our trip to Puerto Rico gets closer and closer every day. Just three more weeks and I am off to a week of sun, sand and hopefully bikinis (still working on that.) The fact the DJ cooks fucking amazing food doesn’t help me in losing weight in any way. Anyways, this will be an epic trip. We are going snorkeling, scuba-diving, zip lining and to top it off, we are camping out on the beach. Imaging waking up listening to the waves hitting the shores in the morning with the cool wind making whoosh whoosh noises.. Ahhhhh..blisss..Ohh that reminds me..I need to pack my yoga mat. Looking forward to do some beach yoga.
I had to time this trip very precisely. With my PTO of 4 days and a national holiday (Good Friday) this will be a 9 day long trip. Also to maximize our stay there, I booked tickets late evening Friday and late morning Sunday. So here is the itinerary:
Friday 22nd March – Flight out of San Antonio at 7pm and will reach San Juan at 5 am the next morning.
Saturday 23rd March – Land at San Juan and pick up rental car and drive to Luquillo Beach to set up camp. Our goal for this day is to just relax and do some snorkeling. Based on my online research Luquillo Beach is apparently a very good beach to snorkel since the water isn’t too rough.
Sunday 24th March – Visit El Yunque rain forest and Zip line. Explore the forest as much as we can. Take some awesome pics and Zip Line through the trees.
Monday 25th March – Take the ferry from Fajardo to Culebra beach and go scuba diving at Flamenco Beach. The company that comes highly recommended is Culebra Divers. Spend the day scuba diving and at the beach and head back to town to eat lunch at Barbara- Rosa’s. In the evening take ferry back to Fajardo and drive back to Luquillo Beach.
Tuesday 26th March – Pack up camp and leave for Ponce. Spend the day there and drive to Lajas in the afternoon and at night drive and set up camp at Anasco.
Wednesday 27th March – Drive to Cumuy Cave and take the tour and in the afternoon take the trip to Arecibo.
Thursday 28th March – Pack up camp at Anasco and drive back to San Juan. Explore San Juan and check into hotel (Yes, we did take 2 nights hotel since we wanted to wine and dine for the actual day of our anniversary)
FRIDAY 29TH MARCH – ANNIVERSARY DAY!! Spend time together J
Saturday 30th March – Check out of hotel and drive to Fajardo. Explore Fajardo during the day and take the bio bay kayak trip in the evening. Return to San Juan airport at night and drop off the car and take flight back to San Antonio L
Sunday 31st March – Flight back to San Antonio.
Yes, I know I skipped the the mountains in this trip but we still have 3 more weeks to plan this out. Maybe we will squeeze it in somehow, but as of now here is the plan. And with flight, hotel, car and our expenses, this trip shouldn't cross our budget of $3000. Lets see if we can make it :)
Safe travels!!

Ha Long Bay Ha Long Bay

Description:
Ha Long Bay (Vietnamese: Vịnh Hạ Long,
listen, literally: "descending dragon bay") is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a popular travel destination, located in Quang Ninh province, Vietnam. Administratively, the bay belongs to Hạ Long City, Cẩm Phả town, and part of Van Don district. The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various sizes and shapes. Ha Long Bay is a center of a larger zone which includes Bái Tử Long bay to the northeast, and Cát Bà islands to the southwest. These larger zones share similar geological, geographical, geomorphological, climate, and cultural characters.Ha Long Bay has an area of around 1,553 km2, including 1,960–2,000 islets, most of which are limestone. The core of the bay has an area of 334 km2 with a high density of 775 islets.[1] The limestone in this bay has gone through 500 million years of formation in different conditions and environments. The evolution of the karst in this bay has taken 20 million years under the impact of the tropical wet climate.[2] The geo-diversity of the environment in the area has created biodiversity, including a tropical evergreen biosystem, oceanic and sea shore biosystem.[3] Ha Long Bay is home to 14 endemic floral species[4] and 60 endemic faunal species.[5]
Historical research surveys have shown the presence of prehistorical human beings in this area tens of thousands years ago. The successive ancient cultures are the Soi Nhụ culture around 18,000–7000 BC, the Cái Bèo culture 7000–5000 BC[6] and the Hạ Long culture 5,000–3,500 years ago.[7] Hạ Long Bay also marked important events in thehistory of Vietnam with many artifacts found in Bài Thơ Mout, Đầu Gỗ Cave, Bãi Cháy.[7]
500 years ago, Nguyen Trai praised the beauty of Hạ Long Bay in his verse Lộ nhập Vân Đồn, in which he called it "rock wonder in the sky".[8] In 1962, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam listed Hạ Long Bay in the National Relics and Landscapes publication.[9] In 1994, the core zone of Hạ Long Bay was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site according to criterion vii, and listed for a second time according to criterion viii.[1

A Trip to Safed, Israel -- Cit A Trip to Safed, Israel -- City of Kabbalah
- From: laurierappeport
-
Description:
Spending a day in Safed is like stepping back into the 16th century, the era in which Safed became the fourth of Judaism's Four Holy Cities. The old historic Jewish Quarter is built on the mountainside, below the ruins of the Crusader Castle which dominates the mountaintop. Throughout the old lanes and twisting alleyways of the Old Quarter visitors can enter the synagogues and other sites that are rich with religious, cultural and historic meaning.
Safed was the home of Kabbalists throughout the Medieval era and the Middle Ages but after the Spanish Inquisition expelled its Jews in 1492, hundreds of displaced Jews immigrated to the Land of Israel, among them many of the great kabbalistic scholars of the period. They settled in Safed and the new teachings of Jewish mysticism that eminated from the town earned Safed the name "City of Kabbalah."
Today tourists can wander through the area, visiting the Old Jewish Synagogues and viewing some of the sites where much of the Jewish laws, practices and traditions which are known throughout the Jewish world today originated.
ARI Ashkanazi Synagogue and the ARI Sepharadi Synagogue
In 1570 Rabbi Isaac Luria, one of the greatest kabbalah scholars of all times, arrived in Safed. Although he only lived in the city for three years before his untimely death, he succeeded in revising the study of Kabbalah to its present-day discipline as a way of viewing the secrets embedded in the Jewish Torah as a way to help man strengthen his relationship with his fellow man and with God. Legend relates that Rabbi Luria, known as The ARI -- The Lion -- sat in the Eliyahu HaNavi synagogue, Safed's largest 16th century synagogue, with Elijah the Prophet who taught the ARI new ways of understanding the mystical traditions of the Kabbalah. After the ARI's death the synagogue was renamed the "ARI Sepharadi" synagogue. It is open daily where visitors can see the cave where the ARI sat with Elijah.
The Girigos synagogue was built in the 1400s by Jewish exiles who had been forcibly converted to Christianity in Spain and subsequently fled, first to the Isle of Girigos in the Mediterranean and then to Safed. Once in Safed they were viewed with suspicion by the existing Jewish community because of their conversion. They built their synagogue on the outskirts of the town, near a field. The ARI developed the tradition of beginning the Sabbath with a preliminary service, "Kabbalah Shabbat" -- songs, psalms and hymns, which he would sing with his students in the orchard next to the Girigos synagogue. After the ARI's death the Jews of Girigos were integrated into the Safed community and their synagogue was renamed the "ARI Ashkanazi."
Abuhav Synagogue
According to local lore the Abuhav synagogue was built in Spain and transported, magically, to Safed by Rabbi Abuhav, a 15th century Kabbalist. Other versions of the story indicate that it was planned in Spain and built in Safed. The Abuhav synagogue is built in the Sepharadi (Mediterranean/North African Jewish) style with the "bima" -- podium -- in the center of the synagogue and the benches for the congregants surrounding the bima. There are seven steps leading up to the bima which correspond, according to Kabbalah, to the six days of the week which culminate in the 7th day -- the Sabbath. The elaborately-decorated synagogue features a high domed ceiling which is framed by etchings and sketchings of animals, birds and plants. The Abuhav synagogue houses two old Torah scrolls which were penned in the 15th/16th centuries. These scrolls are still used on holidays.
Yosef Caro Synagogue
Rabbi Yosef Caro is best known as the redactor of the "Shulhan Aruch" -- Code of Jewish Law -- which he wrote with, according to legend, an angel, in a cave below the synagogue that bears his name. Rabbi Caro wanted to create a volume of Jewish Law that could be used by Jewish communities worldwide to continue to follow the laws properly, even after the Spanish Expulsion dispersed these Jews around the world. Today's Yosef Caro synagogue is situated in the midst of the Old Jewish Quarter and is open in the mornings. The cave, below the synagogue, is accessible by the stairs that are situated to the left of the synagogue.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Accommodation: In XianAs an ancient capital city to 13 dynasties, Xian has a rich recorded history, frequently enhanced by the evidence of new discoveries, like the 1974 unearthing of the fabulous Terracotta Warriors, the long forgotten army created to guard Emperor Qin Shihuang's tomb. In accordance with ancient beliefs, this grand project was mounted at enormous cost by the cruel and tyrannical Emperor, only to be attacked, plundered, burnt and buried after his funeral by the peasants who'd labored under the whip to build it. Then, over two thousand years later, this 'Eighth Wonder of the World' was rediscovered by farmers digging a well. The fine troops, horses and carriages in battle formation are a National ancient art treasure. Three excavation pits are now opened to the public and a fourth is nearing completion. You can, like US President Clinton, now gaze in wonder upon this historic site, listed by UNESCO in 1987 as a world cultural heritage.
The first landmark visitors will encounter in Xian is the ancient City Wall, which stretches round the old city. Xian was always a walled city, and today wall represents one of the oldest and best preserved Chinese city walls, as well being one of the largest ancient military defensive systems in the world. The first city wall of Chang'an was begun in 194 BCE. The existing wall was started during the Ming Dynasty in 1370; it is massive, measuring 13.7 km in circumference, 12 m in height, and 15–18 m in thickness at the base. The South Gate and North Gate are the two main entrances to the inner city. The city itself is neatly arranged along the city wall. This impressive structure is just a precursor to the remarkable discoveries awaiting visitors to Xian.
The Big Wild Goose Pagoda was built in 652 during the Tang Dynasty and originally had five stories, although the structure was rebuilt in 704 during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian and its exterior brick facade renovated during the Ming Dynasty. One of the pagoda's many functions was to hold sutras and figurines of the Buddha that were brought to China from India by the Buddhist translator and travelers Xuanzang. Now this well-preserved holy place for Buddhist has been the symbol of Xian.
Tang Dynasty Show with Dinner that was created for "emperors only" in ancient China. You can enjoy the sumptuous dinner while watching a fabulous dancing and singing performance of the Tang Dynasty. This is not only a performance of Chinese traditional dancing and singing, but a re-enactment of Chinese ancient ceremony and culture.

Today you'll find a Buddhism shrine - Jade Buddha Temple, which is located in a crowd of Shanghai City. It was first built in 1882 in Jiangwan on the southern outskirts of Shanghai. In order to make it convenient for the adherents to visit, it was bodily moved to Shanghai City at the present sire in 1918. It is named for its two bejeweled white jade Buddha. It receives thousands of visitors and worshipers everyday while keeps its sanctity and charming. Carved from a whole piece of white jade, the sitting jade Buddha statue is translucent with a solemn expression, displaying the excellent skill and extraordinary art of Chinese people.
Yuyuan Garden has a lot of stories for it was severely damaged in the 19th century and was restored in 1961. This garden was first built in the 16th century by provincial governor, Pan Yunduan, in honor of his father who was the then government minister. It has many scenic courtyards decorated with baroque rockery, pools, and flora that are all connected by corridors and passageways. The delicate design and exquisite layout of the whole garden reveals a strong impression of 'garden in the garden, whole in the part.

The Bund is the showcase with the old buildings of colonial-era leftover along Huangpu River. The renowned waterfront district is the city's most famous landmark. The word BUND is of Anglo-India origin meaning embankment on the waterfront. It is also the popular site to enjoy the night view of the city

Description:Coppy right PJandMikeWell yes I am back - I know you have all missed me whilst I have been scanning off on Halong Bay. So here goes, we get picked up on time by the cruise company and start picking up the other passengers. This is where the fun began as we had one gentleman who was Australian (name of Nigel), he had a very loud voice and very funny. It’s very interesting that the passengers on board were multi cultural i.e. a couple from the gold coast in Australia, a couple from Spain, a couple from Singapore, a couple from France, 2 couples from Turkey and a lady from Korea - told you we were multi-cultural.The cruise did not look exactly like the pictures from outside but we found out that the Vietnamese government has instructed all the big cruise boats on Halong Bay must be painted white. Anyway, after this was our only disappointment on the trip as our cabin was at the front and had a balcony with sun beds - how lucky are we or what!So after dropping our bags off we take a boat ride on a smaller boat to see the floating village of Vung Vieng and then onto a pontoon where they show you how they Implant oysters to achieve pearls - that amazed me as I never knew they did this I always thought you were lucky if you had an oyster with a pearl in - how I thought they would have enough pearls to make necklaces, earrings etc I don't know.So after the little excursion we go back to the cruise ship and have a sunset party of sangria which really helped the Spanish couple to integrate. Then we had a cooking class and yes you guessed it we made spring rolls - I should be an expert at these as remember I made them in Cambodia. As you are all well aware by now of my competitive nature I was really up for this cooking class and not only wanted to make the best but also the fastest. After dinner there was squid fishing but as we were told that it is not squid season I could not see the point in standing at the back of the boat with fishing net and no chance of catching a squid. So next morning, We went to a little bay and jump kayak. We are taken by our guide Duan (English name Tim) in our kayaks to a little cave which the water is filling up and it is pitch black. I start to panic as we are in a double kayak Mike is shouting at me to go left - remember I don't know my right from left and in a panic situation I can tell you I really do not know it and so I go right and we are stuck under the top of the cave. We have a torch but as I said I was panicking and could not turn this on - so Mike is shouting at me turn the torch on I am shouting back I cannot turn the thing on! What a palaver! All I could think of is we are stuck and the water is coming into the cave so Mike agreed to turn around. So after the cave we kayak around the bay through some really nice BIG natural stone arches. We then return to the boat for lunch. After lunch we are taken to a secluded beach with only a few people on and you can only get to by boat. This was where the fun started - there was a group of Vietnamese men who kept on covering themselves in sand and hollering - it was like none of them had seen sand before. Then they get in the sea and take their trunks off - they were really enjoying themselves - it was great to watch. So up early this morning and after breakfast we go to visit the Amazing Cave - yes that is what it is called. After this we are taken back to shore and here we are back in Hanoi at the same hotel - which is good as we left our big bags here, we are sad to leave Owen and Vicki the couple we spent yesterday with as they were great company but we will be keeping in touch with them.

Great 3 day trip through Halon Great 3 day trip through Halong Bay!

Amsterdam , The Netherlands
We had booked a 3 day trip through Halong Bay with Indochina Sails on board of their Indochina Sails 1 or 2 and we stayed in two Superior rooms. A good mid size boat with in total 15 cabins.
It was GREAT ! Luxury boat , excellent service, nice cabins, great program, fine sun deck with deck chairs, cool lounge, sunny clear weather and above all the stunning beauty of Halong Bay .
Halong Bay is actually quite a risky location as is is often foggy and it is known for its rainy days. Well, that is just a matter of 'luck'. In all kinds of weather Halong Bay has a certain magic, and when sailing through you sort of expect a dragon to appear any time.....
The first day soon we arrived at Luon Cave after an excellent lunch. We explored the area in a sea kayak; great fun and good opportunity to be active.
Stay on the sun deck having an early afternoon drink and enjoy the stunning sunset in Halong Bay.

Getting up early the second day we started with a lesson Tai Chi. Quite an exercise as it was already 30+ Celsius at 7 am. We loved it and being home in the Netherlands again my wife and I just started a full course.
During this second day we explored much more of Halong bay using a 'day boat'. I had no idea what a day boat was supposed to be and had imagined a tender or other kind of small motor boat. On the contrary: it proofed to be a mid size fully equipped ship with a nice cool lounge, beautiful sun deck and full staff. And that for about 12 people. Not bad at all.
During this day we really went into Halong Bay visiting a remote floating village, doing some kayaking, visiting a Pearl farm, doing some swimming and all being surrounded by the most beautiful scenery. You did not know what to photograph first or last. I would not want to have missed this second day as it opened up Halong Bay to us.The third day we visited Surprise Cave . I usually am not so much into caves, if you have seen one of them you have seen all of them, but I have to admit that Surprise Cave was something special. The size alone is unbelievable and the beautiful rock formations are stunning.
This 3 day cruise with Indochina Sails was for sure of of the highlights of out trip through Vietnam . Perfectly organized and the crew had not lost its personal attention to detail even having done this trip XXX times over. You will regret doing the 2 day only cruise as you miss the most beautiful parts of Halong Bay and all the fun exploring it.
