    The Catalan region of Spain is buffeted on one side by the Pyrenees Mountains and decorated with beautiful beaches and Mediterranean coastline to the east.  The fiercely independent spirit is present in the Northern landscape, the regions celebrated artists, and even their adamant refusal to give up their language and just assimilate into the rest of Spanish culture.

    Barcelona is one of Europe's most charming large cities.  Whether you are strolling through the narrow ancient walkways of the old city or strolling the wide boulevarded Las Ramblas with native Catalonians and masses of tourists, the city retains an intimate feeling.  The modern artists, Las Modernistas, draw you in with their charming, always developing and maturing art and the people of Barcelona are eager to share.  The talent of Antonio Gaudi, one of the city's most celebrated sons, shines from the forward-thinking Parc Guell to the innovative apartment dwelling Casa Batllo and is culminated in his masterpiece, La Sagrada Familia.  Pablo Picasso began his life wandering the streets and studying in the art institutes of Barcelona and always returned to his homeland.  The Museo Picasso is one of my favorite museums- and one of the easiest for my children to see the growth and development of the artist since it is laid out chronologically.  And Joan Miro is honored with the Fundacion Miro on the hillside near Castel Montjuic.  But art aside, Barcelona has so much more to offer- Las Tapas, Cava, Shopping, Beaches, a Cable car ride over the harbor, and friendly, friendly people.  And I forgot to mention- usually some of the most competitive Eastern US to Europe airfares.

    Whether you are using Barcelona as an entry point for a larger trip or as a home base, you will not be disappointed.  An overnight train will have you in Marseilles by morning, a two and a half hour car ride will take you to the base of the Pyrenees or the Costa Brava, Spain's celebrated coast.  We spent three idyllic days in the small village of Cadaques which, in October, was quiet and breathtaking.  The mountainside leading to the village is covered in olive groves and vineyards, the village of whitewashed stucco buildings is tucked into the hillside, and its simple church dominates the evening skyline.  A short scooter ride up the coast provides great hiking at Cap de Creus national park with a photogenic lighthouse  and a view of the French border.  A scenic 10 minute ride up the coast takes you to Port Lligat, the home of Salvador Dali for his last few decades.

    A trip to Catalan is a feast for the senses: rugged mountains juxtaposed with sweeping coastlines, tasty tapas, ancient seafood recipes, modern artists with innovative shapes and bright splashes of color, markets filled with local produce, street performers, and 5th generation fishermen.  And somehow they all blend for the most savory experience.

    In October 2005, Chinese National Geography and 34 media co-evaluated and co-graded "China's most beautiful places." The result was a compilation of over 100 scenic splendors -- divided into 17 types of attraction: mountains, lakes, forests, grasslands, deserts, Danxia landscapes, islands, coastlines, waterfalls, glaciers, gorges, city districts, country towns and villages, show caves, peak forest, Yadan landforms and wetlands. 
    China is a vast land, rich in tourism resources. It comes out in front in the world in scenic spots and historical sites, spectacular landscapes, and colorful and varied national customs.It is hard to tell how many beautiful places there are on China’s 9.6 million square kilometers of land and its 3 million square kilometers of seas. Though many similar comparisons have been made, using different criteria, methods and categories, we still believed that we should make our own summary.
    The list of China's Ten Most Beautiful Mountains (BEST time to go just for reference):
    TOP 1 Namjagbarwa Peak (Tibet Autonomous Region): Paradise in the Clouds
    BEST time to go: from February to April, October and November is the best to climb.
    TOP 2   Mountain Gongga or Minya Konka (Sichuan Province): Where the wind stops to rest
    BEST time to go:May and June is the period of dry and wet (rain) seasons alternating and also is the best time for climbing.

    Criterion of China's Ten Most Beautiful Mountains:
    * With unique well-worth appreciating value;
    * With the characteristics of that kind of geography shape and high scientific value;
    * Above 1000 meters in relative height, featured in the number and characteristics of vertical severity;
    * With high cultural values;
    * No excessive exploitation by humankind.
