I have been living in Delhi for more than 5 years and in all these years, I never had the chance to explore this buzzing, crowded, fanatic and exotic city. Yet what I have discovered in these few years is, I have been to some really amazing place to dine. Honestly I am a foodies, I live to eat and in case if you happen to visit Delhi, I would highly recommend everyone to check out these cool places.
Dilli Haat: The moment you land in Delhi, ask anyone about Dilli Haat. Am quite sure that there isn’t a single soul in Delhi who have never been to this place. Dilli Haat is a sort of restaurants or food stall mecca cum shopping center. Here one can find tons of restaurants serving mouthwatering cuisine as according to the different states of India
Satya Niketan: To reach this place simply ask your taxi driver or auto driver to take you to Satya Niketan, near DU south Campus. Among one of the coolest places to be (tat’s because its situated near Delhi University South Campus), here in Satya Niketan you will find variety of restaurants serving from India and Chines to South India, North East India Dishes and so on….Above all the food is dirt cheap.
Mohan Singh Market, RK Puram : A must for meat lover, tough this place may look more like a slum hub but you will also find tons of restaurants serving divine beef, mutton and chicken dishes. Above all the price is almost like free. Two people can dine to their heart content for a mere fifty rupees. But do bring along a bottle of water as many (including me) consider the water offered at the restaurants here is not health.
This camel and rider travel over the dunes of the Thar Desert near Khuri in Rajasthan.
Useful Travel Tips
HI, My name is "Raju India" many years of my work as a professional tourist taxi driver in India and Nepal I drove more then one million km. without accident, during all this time I always discover and collect information from other places which is useful for any western tourist during there India travel. Here below is the list which will help you lot if you careful about all this:-
GENERAL TIPS FOR INDIA & NEPAL TRAVEL
Visiting India or Nepal can be a wee bit unnerving for the first-time visitor. The lifestyle and culture is totally different from the West. I made a list of some important dos and don'ts for hassle-free and enjoyable travel in these both countries.
A proper VISA to enter and stay in India & Nepal is a must. There are reported cases when travellers are advised non-requirement of Indian/Nepal VISA by their travel agents. Practically every foreign national requires VISA to enter these countries.
Do not encourage beggars.
Don't trust strangers with money. Trust your hotel, but not people you may bump into on the streets.
Don't offer bribes to get any job done. Bribe-taking and bribe-giving are a common practice in India but they are intended to speed up things or win a favour that you are not entitled to. Plan well in advance. Use consultants or trade and industry associations. If you expect favours, let them come free or not at all. Warn anyone (even in government) who asks you for a bribe that you would report him to the Anti-Corruption Bureau or the nearest police-station. If he persists, do it discreetly so that he can be caught red-handed.
Indian English has its own delights especially to foreigners of English nativity. Don't show amusement at the different Indian accents and choice of words. This does not take away from the fact that many Indians speak and write better English than many native English speakers.
It is advisable to cover yourself with travel insurance for thefts, loss and medi-claim.
Carry proper maps of the places proposed to visit in India/Nepal, as signboards are often absent. Try to reach a station during daytime if travelling on your own. In any case avoid persistent touts and taxi-drivers at airport/stations/bus stand to help you find your hotel. Always use tourist assistance desk for proper advice.
Women travelling alone in certain deserted places should avoid walking at odd hours.
While changing money, insist on getting encashment certificate.
Do not checkout of the hotel in hurry. While checking out it has been noticed in some hotels, the extras are unreasonably charged which the guest hurriedly pays without cross-checking.
Do not leave your cash and valuables in your hotel rooms. Keep your cash divided in different pockets.
Take care of proper disposal of your rubbish always whether you are exploring desert, or Himalayas or beaches or anywhere else.
Don't accept offers of visiting anyone's home unless you are confident of the person.
Use licensed guides for sightseeing.
Always use strong suitcases/baggage, as mishandling is common at airports/stations.
Don't tip unreasonably and unnecessarily in a hotel. The NEWS soon spreads in the hotel and by the time you checkout there will be a group of them saluting you to expect something.
In Monsoon time avoid night stay in the desert while you do camel safari.
Most of the monuments give very good discount for students from all over the world.
They must carry there valid school identity card.
SHOPPING
Don't buy antiques more than 100 years old. Selling and buying "shahtoosh" shawls is a crime. The same goes for ivory and wildlife.
Buy at genuine shops only. Bargaining is a popular practice in India and necessary too. Don't ever believe in lucrative offers of antique dealers in which they offer you to carry a parcel of some other buyer back home with your own margin described. Entire transaction should be legal and transparent so that you may claim later if dissatisfied.
Almost every touristy town you will found some boys and they will introduce you as poor student with many different stories, finally there target is to sell you and get commission.
Indian Customs department at the airport stop some people from Spain in 2006, Her name was Lionor Mendoza, because they were carrying some Auer Vedic Medicines ( Herbal), which they bought from one of the Aurveda Message resort from South of India. I had an interesting village crafts tour during my stay in Jodhpur, India. The tour was actually a last minute decision after my breakfast when I saw a flyer on the wall at the B&B I was staying at in Jodhpur. The tour consisted of my husband and I along with our guide, a bright young man, in his early twenties. I thought to myself I had nothing to lose; the cost of the tour was equivalent to $10, and I could escape the hustle and bustle of the crowded, loud city for a day.
The tour included a taxi taking us to nearby rural villages, known as Bushnoi villages, outside of Jodhpur admist the desert-like terrain. Our first stop was visiting a traditional Bushnoi family in their home to see their way of life. We felt very honored to be guests in their home, and even participated in a offering ceremony. The home was mostly made up of clay and a roof that resemble thatched roofing. Open fire ovens were a centerpiece in the kitchen.
The second stop on our village tour was the home of a potter. The potter's home was a delight in that I actually got to participate by making a pot. The potter's wheel was spun by a stick inserting into a grove that you could spin round and round until you built up enough momentum to start molding your clay. I was definately no expert, but it was fun trying!
The third stop was at a dhurrie weaver's house and studio. This was truely amazing. I got a weaving 101 introduction from the brother of the family. The whole process of rugs is like magic...from collecting your fibers, to hand dying them from natural sources like plants, to spinning it into yarn and placing it in the loom. Talk about craftsmanship! Of course there are finished products you can purchase. Mine was a small bedside dhurrie which was conveniently folded up for me into the size of a book, fitting perfectly into my suitcase. What is even better is that the money goes towards sustaining the family business which preserves their way of life and culture
It’s called research, research, research and bargaining!
Previously I had traveled to India with Intrepid Travel and fell in love with their tours. My husband and I thought what a better way to spend our honeymoon in Thailand touring around and stopping off in Oahu on the way back to the mainland to get married. I had researched Intrepid Travel’s Thailand tours and found a 9 day tour, ‘Treasures of the South’ from Bangkok to Phuket for $677 per person, which included our 5% discount we received since I previously traveled to India with Intrepid Travel. My husband, Dave, and I tend to go ‘outside the box’ and did our honeymoon first. We got airline tickets for about $1318 each. Leaving on Christmas Day (cheaper), took us from Phoenix to Bangkok then on the way back from Phuket to Korea (10 hour layover) to Oahu, Hawaii to spend a week, get married and back home to Phoenix. In Oahu we stayed at the Hale Koa Hotel. My father is in the military, retired Navy, so we got an awesome deal of $617 for 5 nights. We got married right on the Hale Koa grounds in the flower gazebo for $50. The Hale Koa has luau’s every Thursday so we thought what a better way to throw a reception. We don’t have to think about the food and we get entertainment. For the luau it’s $49.50 per person. We had 21 guest and that includes a free cocktail, which comes out to $1039.50. I asked our waiter at the luau to run a bar tab just on my guest which only came out to $202 including gratuity. I wanted to give my guest leis, doing my research I read in Chinatown you can find leis for $3. And that’s just what we did. We got beautiful HUGE orchid leis for $3 each which came out to $63 for 21 leis. For our officiant and photographer I found a company online, Bridal Dream Wedding, that has an officiant, photographer and best of all, a ukeleli player for only $529! And that’s includes a cd with 70 professional images on it. Now this is all a BARGAIN!
THE HIGHLIGHTS
THAILAND
bangkok My husband, Dave, and I arrived to Thailand a day early before we were to meet with our tour group so I hired us a private tour guide through letstourbangkok.com. For the both of us for an 8 hour day it came to about $45 total for our guide. We went to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Forensic Medicine Museum, markets, shopping and had great Thai food, Chatuchak Weekend Market and Muay Thai boxing at Lumpini Stadium. I highly recommend a local guide the first few days if anyone is to visit Bangkok. In 1 day we managed to take 6 forms of transportation: skybus, tuk tuk, taxi, long tail boat, river boat and the subway. If you love massages and to shop Bangkok is the place to go! After meeting our tour group we visited Wat Arun and headed to the train station for an overnight right to Krabi.
krabiThe overnight train was so much fun. They served us dinner and the beds weren’t too bad. Next mornings arrival to Krabi was such anticipated - the beach! We stayed in a guesthouse about a mile walk to the beach. Krabi was on of our favorite places. We frequented the ‘Chang Bar’ at night with our fellow travelers for a few cocktails and the game of Jenga. It was country against county and yes, the Americans won! From Krabi you can take boats to the surrounding islands. The water is so crystal clear and perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
ko yao noi After spending two nights in Krabi we headed over to Ko Yao Noi. Our itinerary didn’t go as planned due to rain so we toured the island, visited a rubber plantation, and just hung around our huts across the beach. It was quite relaxing. phuket Two days of lounging around on in Ko Yao Noi was quite enough for us! On our way to Phuket.
phuketThe beaches are very pretty and the sand is soft. For entertainment we even got to see a Ping Pong show and I’m not talking table tennis. You’d be amazed what can fit in a human orifice: ping pong, darts, string with razor blades and A BIRD! Now that’s talent! If you go to Thailand, eat from the street vendors. It’s some of the best food. Dave and I had our fair share of chicken on a stick. And no we didn’t get food poisoning. For about $50 you can take a cruise boat from Phuket and travel to the Phi Phi Islands where they filmed ‘The Beach’. We took the opportunity to see the Phi Phi’s and I’m glad we did. The snorkeling was fantastic. Phuket was nice but VERY touristy. I think there were more tourist then Thais. koreaPhuket was our last stop in Thailand before heading to Oahu to meet our families and get married. We had a 10 hour layover in Korea so we thought we’d check out Seoul. For about $10 you can stow your luggage at the airport. The information desk was very helpful at the airport and gave us a bus map to Seoul. We arrived in the city and quite shocked. People from Thailand are so friendly and coming to Seoul was quite the opposite. I was amazed that more people didn’t know or understand English. It was a culture shock.
HAWAII
oahu It was so exciting to arrive to Oahu and know that our families and close friends were there for our wedding. I planned a few tid bits for everyone. I have a book, ‘Oahu Revieled’, and I must say, it’s one of the best books out there on Oahu. That book has so many suggestions on things to do and has fantastic maps of the island. One of our activities was shark diving (in cages of course). We went with Oahu Shark Encounters and it runs $100pp. It was the best experience ever. We also did a sunset cruise for $50 with Outrigger Catamaran. Not only do you get to ride on a catamaran but it’s open bar - FREE! Warning - if you go to Hanauma Bay, go before 9am. We left around 10am and the park was already closed due to too many cars. Luckily it was whale watching season while we were there. We hiked up to one of the lighthouses on the eastern island. We didn’t see any whales breech but we sure did see a lot of them spouting. All in all it was a fantastic trip. Thailand is one of our favorite places and hope to go back one day to do some humanitarian work. I have one last suggestion, if you’re planning a vacation, make sure you do your research. You can finds things for a lot cheaper and maybe even find untouristy things to do which make some of the better memories.
I ndia... a world in itself; nowhere else can one find such diversity, such beauty, such innocence and such pleasure as in India.
India is one of the oldest civilizations on the Earth.
What strikes a visitor to India most is its mind-boggling heterogeneity, an awesome plurality that confounds and exasperates and yet evokes a binding interest in the land and its people. Doubtless, the ancient traders and historic marauders who came here from far away lands in search of riches fell in love with the soil and found their destination and place of settlement in the sub-continent rather than a staging post. A staggering variety within its confines in terms of its people, their languages, religions, cults and cultures as also its geographical features and weather which, perhaps, no other country, least of all a democratic nation, can boast of. And yet despite these stunning differences there exists a subtle binding force flowing through one end of the country to the other that underlines its enduringly mysterious unity. Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime minister thus characterized the staggering phenomenon as unity in diversity, a mosaic of cultures and people. That gives India a distinct identity unmatched in the world. Indians never miss an opportunity to assert their pride in their land's assimilative variety.
Modern India is a vibrant country, proud of its transparent democracy which is the largest in the world. Few countries of the developing world liberated after the Second World War have preserved and protected their democratic institutions so jealously. True, some pockets of poverty remain and slums proliferate in cities and towns. But by and large, India's scientific and industrial skills along with the living standards and styles of its middle classes put it firmly in the 21 century. Its young information technology engineers and entrepreneurs have acquired respect in the world. The growth rate of its GDP today is next only to that of China. It pulsates with the vigour and energy of its people who are ready to conquer the new world.
