  • Byodo In Temple – The Perfect Byodo In Temple – The Perfect Place to Spend a Day in Serenity at Oahu

    • From: CatherineWatson
    • Description:

byodo in templeLast month I went to the Hawaiian Island Oahu with a couple of my friends and it was one of my best summer vacations ever. Our Oahu trip started with a lot of activity. We toured the historic Pearl Harbor, tried our hands at snorkeling in North shore and also visited the Polynesian Culture Center which provided us a deeper insight into Polynesian culture. It was educational and entertaining at the same time.

After all the excitement and activities, we wanted to experience something different, something to pacify our soul and mind in Hawaii. Our friendly chauffeur of Hawaii Taxi and Shuttle Service suggested us to visit Byodo-In Temple, situated at the foot of Koolau Mountain in the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park. We googled it to get more information. When we found out that the temple had been featured in ABC’s Emmy Award Winning drama series LOST, as the home of Korean woman Sun’s father, our excitement just doubled. We could not hold ourselves and we visited Byodo-In the very next day.

Some highlights of our Byodo-In Temple visit:

      Ringing the Bon-Sho

Bon- shoAfter a drive through a cemetery, we reached the premises of the temple. As soon as we set foot inside the area of the temple, we could not help but ring the massive three-ton brass bell called Bon-sho. Turns out, apparently, it is customary to ring the bell before entering the temple to purify your mind off of evil spirits. We didn’t know that.

Close to the bell there was a small donation box where we donated few pennies. Our small effort in contributing to the temple, which in fact helps maintain its grandeur.

Capturing the beauty of Byodo In Temple:

BEAUTIFUL SCENERY OF BYODO IN TEMPLEByodo-In is truly a hidden gem of Oahu tucked away behind the valley of temples cemetery. The landscaped grounds, postcard perfect scenes and landmarks under the deep lush green hills are so awe inspiring that we could not resist ourselves and took hundreds of photographs. It was our way of trying to capture a bit of the peacefulness and natural beauty that the temple offers.

      Praying to the Amida Buddha

Amida BuddhaThe main attraction of the temple is 9 feet tall, gold lacquer painted, wood carved statue of Amida/Lotus Buddha inside the Phoenix hall. This big statue is surrounded by a series of other small statues of Boddhisattvas (the enlightened beings).

We had to take off our shoes in order to enter the hall where devotees were praying in front of the statue. They were offering flowers and burning incense to the Amida Buddha. I also got a chance to offer some flowers to the amazingly peaceful looking Amida Buddha.

      Enjoying with the Nature’s Critters:

WILD LIFE OF BYODO IN TEMPLEIn the temple premises, we saw peacocks and black swans roaming in the garden grounds and turtles lounging beside the pond. The ponds of temple are filled with the Japanese fish, Koi. We purchased some fish food from the gift shop and fed them. The gift shop also had some cool Japanese souvenir which I wanted to buy but couldn’t afford it.

After wandering around the temple for an hour, we rested in a Meditation House. The atmosphere was so serene that I could literally feel my inner soul. I have seriously never felt so peaceful in my entire life. I wanted to stay there for the whole day but my friends did not let me do that.

Byodo-In is a perfect spiritual destination to spend a peaceful day, soaking in nature away from the bustling areas of Oahu. Parking is free and it only cost $3 to explore this hidden gem. So, don’t forget to visit this place on your Oahu tour. You will simply find inner peace here.

  • SUNRISE OVER HALONG BAY SUNRISE OVER HALONG BAY

    • From: activetravelasia
    • Description:
      Written by Jenmodelm
We all waited and waited for the sun to rise over the giant rock mountains. It was nearly 6:30am before the sun peaked over the rocks. It was a glorious magnificent sunrise.
Sunrise from the boat…a lovely sight.

Breakfast was served shortly after, it was an Early start to the day. I couldn’t wait for coffee. Each got one fried egg and as much dry white toast as we wanted.

After breakfast we had to be checked out of our rooms by 9am so the boat men could get ready for the next tour. We were stopping by the floating village. We were greeted by the sound of blasting techno dance club type music coming from somebody’s shack. It was so odd. We got in groups of four and ladies came in small wooden row boats to take us around the small village of 300 people; the biggest floating village in halong bay. They even had a little floating primary school. Most parents don’t want their children to go to the city to get more education because it costs money and they want them to stay and hell fish.
The wooden houses floated on large ice chest sized styrofoam or big blue plastic tanks the size of a beer keg. Few people smiled or waved. I think there’s mixed feelings of tourists snapping away photos and strolling through their little village. They have to get at least one tour group a day– minimum. It’s low season here I’m Vietnam too. Our tour guide also said some local people are not so thrilled about the tourists visiting and have been doing so for the last sight years now. The people moved from the mainland to the floating villages because there is more fish available out in the open waters, they don’t have to pay taxes and they prefer the lifestyle.
After seeing the floating village we had two and a half hours back to the mainland. While most people took refuge in the shade I relaxed on the Sundeck soaking in the suns rays and view. Even though our boat went very slow and the scenery was similar I enjoyed soaking as much of it in as I could. I was so relaxed I failed to put sunscreen on my tummy.
A local  fishing boat in the bay
Once back on the mainland we had a quick transfer to our ethnic travel van and an hour drive north towards the Chinese border. We would depart from another Fishing port to our next destination. A small long skinny island with essentially no tourists but ourselves. We had seafood lunch on the boat. Always so good.
A local rows a boat in the bay. Many locals still live and work on the water in the bay.
We were able to kayak one more time, although this time much less impressive than the first. There were no large rock formations or caves to go under.Instead it seemed we were kayaking in a big lake. It was strange to think it was still actually the ocean. We went for a quick swim and jumped off the boat being careful not to get stung by any jellyfish.
Kayaking is a great way to get up close.
The boat continued on for another hour and we sat on the roof of the boat watching the sun set. It was glorious. The sun was just a bright orange ball. Like a Japanese sun in Vietnam. It was really stunning. We arrived at the pier and it was nearly dark. Two tuk tuk scooters picked us up to our homestay.
Sunset in the bay left a golden glow. A great reason to do an overnight junk boat.
I was surprised to get my own room. Unlike the homestays in sapa where mattresses are set side by side, our tour guide said that ethnic travel paid for this family’s Home to be extended into.More of a guesthouse. They wouldn’t make any Money for three years to pay off the house,Thereafter they would make money from it. The family is retired, so they seemed happy to be doing it.
Dinner was served at 7 and we helped to make fresh spring rolls with thin rice paper. Afterwards they were fried and ever so fresh and hot. Soo good! I also noticed that our leftover rice from lunch was being dried on the roof of the boat. They used it to make this amazing popcorn- tasting dried rice with corn. Never had anything like it.
After one beer at dinner and a full belly I was sapped. I called bed time at 9. Took a shower and Crashed just a little before 10.
ACTIVETRAVEL ASIA would like to recommend  Kayaking Halong Bay tour. Halong Bay, located in the Gulf of Tonkin, covers an area of 1500 square km. with more than a thousand limestone peaks soaring from its crystalline emerald water. The calm sea provides an ideal location for sea kayaking as we paddle through a maze of islets amid dramatic natural scenery. With our modern kayaking equipment, we are able to maximize on speed and maneuverability as we explore the open sea and the many hidden lagoons and stalagmite caves that are difficult to access by any other means. After a day of paddling we unwind on our boat and enjoy dinner. This tour offers longer kayaking expedition of Halong Bay. We will paddle amongst islets, visit hidden caves, lagoons, unspoiled beaches, floating fishing village and talk with local fishman.
      Highlights:

      • Amazing limestone formations
      • Inclusive junk for overnight
      • Beautiful and different kayaking route
      • Support boat all the time
      • All meals included

  • Three reasons why Japan's Izu Three reasons why Japan's Izu Peninsula is the perfect budget getaway

    • From: ataylor0307
    • Description:

Tokyo in the summertime is surprisingly humid, for a non-tropical region. If you plan to go outside, even to make a dash from your hotel to the train station, in the name of all that is holy don’t leave without a rag or you’ll regret it. Nothing says summer fun like blinking the burning sweat out of your eyes.

Don’t worry, relief can be found not north, but just a couple hours west, on the Izu Peninsula. If you’re in the Tokyo area, I highly recommend taking a detour there for a couple of days. It’s still hot, but not as humid, and the sea is only a few steps away. In fact one of my best memories of living as an expat in Japan is packing up and taking over a beautiful, Japanese style hostel in the area with a group of friends.

K’s House Ito OnsenK's House Ito Onsen

K’s house is a popular hostel chain in Japan. I’ve been to a few, but none have left their mark on me like the one in Ito. Though modern, the interior retains a traditional Japanese aesthetic. Rooms floored in tatami are hidden away by sliding paper screens. A path of cool, smooth stones leads to the kitchen and common room. And best of all, the hostel has its own public and private onsen (hot springs). There’s nothing like taking a long soak in the hot spring after a day at the beach. The feeling of water just this side of boiling on my aching muscles is bliss, and I always come out feeling like putty. The next stop is the common room, which has a big sliding door opening onto a terrace, a peaceful view of the river right below the hostel, and green hills in the distance. Sitting out there after the hot spring, with the sound of the crickets and the breeze on my still steaming skin, is the closest I’ve ever gotten to Zen.

This place gives the impression of staying at a traditional and expensive Japanese Inn at less than half the price: about $30 USD for a bed in the dorm, or up to $60 USD for a private room ensuite room.

      Shirahama BeachShirahama Beach

Shirahama beach in Shimoda is a little bit of a journey from Ito, but worth the trip. Besides, the view from the train is gorgeous, and the ride will cost you around $15 USD one way. About an hour long train ride beside lush, green mountains, palm-tree lined roads and sparkling blue sea leads to Izukyu Shimoda station, on the Izukyu line.  From there the bus, which is about $3.50 USD, goes straight to the beach. There’s also a grocery store five minutes’ walk from the station, perfect for getting cheap snacks.

Shirahama beach is popular, and it’s easy to see why. In summer the water is warm and clear, with soft rolling waves. The sky is a luminous blue not marred, but enhanced by the white clouds trailing across it. The scenery is as beautiful as any beach in the Caribbean, but at the edge of the beach is a slight cliff. A rocky path leads to the summit and there sits a Shinto shrine, fronted by a red torii, or gate, which stands aloof and proud as if to say, remember, this is Japan.

      Ito Eats

Within 10 minutes’ walk of the station is a shopping arcade with a few restaurants, including some Izakaya—traditional Japanese restaurants serving many appetizers and cocktails. Izu, so close to the sea, has some of the freshest and tastiest sushi and sashimi you’ll eat in all Japan. It melts in your mouth, and the restaurants in the area serve it up with delicious miso soup, fluffy rice and pickled vegetables. There are also a variety of other foods. The most daring of us tried basashi—raw horse meat. I really like the fried crocodile. Dinner and drinks is no more than $30 USD a person, and often much less, making Ito, and a stay at K’s Hostel, one of my favorite budget getaways.

    • From: Lux
    • Description:

Buddies said that during my four day journey in Hong Kong; my weblog was all about Hong Kong’sdelicacies, which lured them. Hong Kong’s special treats are really attractive. You will discover them everywhere in all the methods and walkways. Hong Kong is a position converging gourmets all over the globe. European, Southern, Cantonese, Japanese people, Shanghai taste, etc…. all types of special treats can be discovered in Hong Kong. Strolling in Hong Kong, like walking in the heaven of “eaters”.

The first day in Hong Kong, we were residing in a resort not far away from manchester international airport terminal. It was practical for purchasing, and energetic. Otherwise there was easy to take Anping caber car to see the biggest brown seated Buddha on the globe. We went to see the Buddha and had our lunchtime here. There was a position can eat monk meals. Though the dishes here were all veggie, they were very delightful and relaxing. As we had veggie lunchtime, we made the decision to have supper in an French cafe. The meals here is easy and beautiful. In the candle light, everything seemed so fantasizing. The most attribute of the supper was DIY crushed beans. The breads with French olive oil and crushed beans is so delightful.

The second day in Hong Kong, we had our lunchtime in the first airport terminal of manchester international airport terminal. The crab-flavor seafood and Cantonese drinks here are worth the suggestions. After lunchtime we went to Kowloon, and residing in a resort of this region with Forehead Road, ladies’ street, Australia Dairy Company in close by. Delicacies can be discovered everywhere, and our supper was fixed when we stepped here. If you are a “Eater”, you will discover your pleasure here.

The third day in Hong Kong, we had lunchtime in Hotel Novotel, seafood food, 198 Hong Kong Money per person. The seafood here is very clean. Fish, oyster and prawn are all my preferred. After lunchtime we went to Hong Kong Middle District. Out supper was Tai dishes. It was suggested by my buddy. It is said that the primary of the cafe Apple Shrub used to provide in Tai elegant.

The brief 4 times journey was just making one day. The lunchtime of the last day is simple: breads, French Fried seafood, white-colored bottles, and special-made dessert of the position. The taste is so good as it is successive flavored. After lunchtime, we loaded our baggage and ready to go home. In the bathroom of manchester international airport terminal, we had deserts and clean fruit. Remembering the brief 4-days Hong Kong exquisite journey, oh, I think I drop madly in love with Hong Kong.

  • Mexico Fun at the Grand Velas! Mexico Fun at the Grand Velas!

    • From: ajjordan2
    • Description:

Sometimes we need a little luxury to supplement our budget travel…

Grand VelasI’ve seen the term, “luxury redefined” written in brochures, broadcasted on different websites to describe a wide array of products, services, and accommodations. However, the phrase never crept into my mind before visiting the Grand Velas resort in Riviera Nayarit, Mexico. The resort is a true, luxury all-inclusive resort. It stands in a class of its own; where most all-inclusive resorts offer complimentary room service, all-you-can-eat dining options, and bottomless alcoholic beverages, the Grand Velas takes it 10 steps further to create the first-rate service, fine dining, top shelf alcohol, and constant pampering that one would expect from a AAA five-diamond ranked property.

The hotel contains one of the “Leading Spas of the World” (Spa Grand Velas RivieraGrand Velas suite Nayarit) and the spa experience begins at check-in. I arrived at the resort Thursday evening, and within minutes, was treated to a 5-minute complementary neck massage in the lobby. The suites also contain spa-themed accents, such as plush bathrobes, his and her slippers, luxurious Gilchrest & Soames bath products, in-room Jacuzzi, and a private sauna (located in the presidential suites). According to the manager of the property, Rodolfo Gonzalez, “room service at the resort is referred to as “suite service” because of the vastness of the rooms (the suites are 900-1,000+ square feet and 95% have ocean views).

Frida interiorThat evening, I had dinner at one of the hotel’s gourmet restaurants, Frida, named after the Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo. All of the hotel’s restaurants have ocean views, and present unsurpassed luxury, down to the cushioned purse stools. The neutral earth toned décor coupled with the Frida Kahlo recipe inscriptions on the wall offered a very Mediterranean feel.

I sampled their six-course meal, some of which included the aguachile duo salmon and sea scallops, fresh tuna in chili seed crust, marinated duck breast in local honey, and the traditional lime pie.

       Frida restaurant_Grand Velas resort

Margarita Tasting__Grand VelasDuring the trip, I participated in a margarita tasting in the lobby bar, which featured all of the specialty margaritas that Frida offers. Out of the 12 sampled, I favored the Peanuts Signature Margarita, the Cilantro Coriander Margarita, and Tamarind Mint Margarita.

After dinner, I overindulged and ordered room service (their 24-hour menu includes primeGrand Velas Room Service selections, such as grilled flanked steak, beef filet in black pepper sauce, mahi-mahi medallion, Hawaiian pizza, and coconut shrimp in mango and mint sauce).

Kids Club_Grand VelasDespite the level of luxury presented throughout the property, the resort is very welcoming towards kids and families. The resort offers activities such as karaoke, guitar band performances, fiestas, and there is also a kids and teen club available. Some of the exciting inclusive activities located at the resort are windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking, cycling, tennis, aqua aerobics, boogie boards, as well as scuba diving demonstrations at the pool. There is also fitness center that offers exercise classes during the weekdays, such as Tae-Bo, Pilates, Hath yoga, Zumba, and Danza Polinesia.

In the mornings, I either ordered room service or dined in their beachside restaurant, Azul.Grand Velas_Azul The restaurant offers panoramic views of the Bahia de Banderas, and is open from 7am to 11pm. Cuisines offered are Mexican, Italian, Japanese, and Chinese, as well as grilled selections and seafood.

Frida interiorFriday evening, I dined at the Italian restaurant, Lucca. The interior is inspired by Roman design, and there was a live piano performance during dinner.

The six course meal included items such as the Rustic Lucca style salad, poached artichoke carpaccio, tortelli in cherry tomato sauce, and baked zucchini.

       Lucca_Grand Velas

The next morning, I experienced my much-anticipated spa treatment at the multipleSpa_Grand Velas award-winning Spa Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit. I chose the Four Hand Samunprai Massage, which included two massage therapists using hot compressions, exotic herbs, and medicinal heat to sooth muscles and release tension. The spa’s design was very calming, adorned with flowers floating in water, neutral earth toned décor, and a large marbled wall with cascading water.

Spa_Grand VelasBefore my massage, I was treated with the complimentary hour long Hydrotherapy Ritual. This started with a revitalizing shower, followed by a visit to the herbal steam room, sauna time, Jacuzzi soak, followed by a dip in the two-temperature lagoon, with a final multi-jet Swiss shower. Currently, the spa is offering a special of purchasing one of their specialty massages, and selecting another massage for only $10.

Piaf_Grand VelasMy last night at the Grand Velas was spent dining at the French cuisine restaurant, Piaf.  The décor was tastefully elaborate with breathtaking avant garde chandeliers, coupled with live violin music. Some of the selections from the menu included the tri-color cream soup (pumpkin, tomato, pea), grilled Scottish salmon in Chardonnay sauce, and the chocolate moelleux with English crème figs. My personal favorite was the Bourguignonne escargots, which were expertly prepared in a creamy butter sauce.

Besides the opportunity to overindulge in the resorts many premier food selections, the Grand Velas offers the ultimate luxury all-inclusive vacation. Take part in the many complimentary water sports and activities available, experience a massage in one of the Leading Spas of the World, and relax by the serene private beach and pool.

On Memorial Day 1999, I had the honor of being at the USS Arizona Memorial, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. It was a fitting place to be on such a day. It was back in the time of film, manual focus and you set the F stop cameras, that I photographed this Japanese man stopping to pray, I was touched by the moment. This particular photo has always been one of my favorites.

  • GIRL'S GETAWAY TO ARUBA GIRL'S GETAWAY TO ARUBA

    • From: ajjordan2
    • Description:

Posing in front of cactiMy best friend and I took a much-needed vacation in Aruba this past February. Aruba has the highest rate of return in the Caribbean, and our experience on the “Happy Island” left very little to be desired…

We stayed at the Aruba Marriott & Stellaris Casino, which recently added a new adults-only pool to their exclusive resort. The pool features a 10,000 sqft terrace, plush cabanas with iPod docking, rum-infused sno-cones, and a fully-stocked bar. This new addition compliments the adults-only Tradewinds Club, which was a similar experience to staying at an all-inclusive hotel.

Access to the Tradewinds Club includes 5 complimentary meals per day, daily open bar serving premium liquor, discovery hour (sampling of different appetizers), tea time, as well as a reserved beach area. The TC rooms include upgraded perks such as pillow menus (feather, foam, etc), plush bathrobes, and luxurious aloe bath products. Aruba Marriott

Both the adults-only hotel and the Tradewinds Club allowed us to experience the pool, beach, and club kids-free. However, we did venture into the main pool a few times to relax in the lazy river.

For dinner, we ate at the Marriott’s Simply Fish restaurant, which offers a sunset dining experience on theSimply Fish sand in front of the lapping waves. As its name implies, the restaurant serves a medley of fresh seafood; try the “Arubian Triangle”, a sampler of lobster, grouper, and seabass (This was our favorite restaurant on the resort, but the hotel also offers Japanese, Italian, and American fare).

       Screaming Eagle

Screaming EagleThe Screaming Eagle was a perfect off-resort restaurant, where the décor was presented in a very intimate and romantic setting. Flowing white drapes enclose private plush love seats to give a feeling of dinner in bed. Some of the popular menu items were the Thai Caramelized Shrimp and the Crème brûlée of Hungarian duck liver. I chose the lobster.

      Screaming Eagle dinner

Saturday night started off as a relaxing night in, but at the stroke of 10pm, we heard the beginnings of music pumping in the distance from our hotel balcony.  We ventured downstairs to what turned out to be a popular beach party adjacent to the Marriott (called Moomba Beach). The party was awesome, and the music selections ranged between R&B, Hip Hop, Reggae, to local artists. There was a guest DJ from New York, as well as popular Aruban artist, DJ Diablo.  (Saturday nights at Moomba Beach are popular for locals as well as tourists).

       Moomba Beach

Other nightspots that we visited were located 5 minutes from the Marriott hotel, which included The Sopranos piano bar, where you can experience live American-based music from the 60’s to current hits, as well as Senor Frogs, Confession, and Gusto lounges (typically younger crowds).Sopranos Piano Bar

The Marriott has a resident casino (Stellaris), and I signed up for blackjack lessons during my second day in Aruba. My first time playing blackjack was very entertaining, although playing with fake money was more comforting then using real money J (the hotel also offers bartender and salsa lessons).

There are many marine/outdoor activities accessible from the Marriott beach. These sports include windsurfing, kite boarding, and paddleboard yoga. We decided to try the paddleboard yoga-an engaging aerobic activity that provided instruction in yoga positions, meditation, and allowed us to “become one with the ocean”.

One of the most widely-used excursion-tour companies on the island is DePalm Tours, as they offer land, air, and sea excursions. My friend and I took a jeep tour, which took us throughout the island of Aruba (which is only 6 miles wide), and allowed us to experience the destination’s arid, desert terrain, filled with cactus plants, rocky cliffs, and natural coral bridges.

       Rocky Aruba Terrain

The tour included a stop at a local Aruban church, a visit to the famous coral bridge which collapsed in 2005, as well as a swimming experience at a natural pool.

We enjoyed our jeep tour so much, that we signed up for the DePalm Tours snorkeling excursion. The tour was a half-day retreat, which took us to three popular beaches for snorkeling. The tour featured an open bar, lunch, and did not have any loud hosts or performers (it was a great laid back choice that allowed us to relax on the boat and snorkel at leisure).

       Snorkel aboard DePalm tours

We upgraded our experience while on the catamaran to the snuba diving tour, which allowed us to dive at 12 feet below and see a greater variety of marine life on the ocean floor.

Paris in December?  Isn’t Paris a spring and summer destination?  Well yes it is, but I can now tell you that it is a great winter vacation as well.  And even though we were in Paris for Le Web, a tech conference, many tourists visit Paris in December.  While it wasn’t as crowded as it was during our summer visit, I was not alone during my visits to museums, churches and other Paris sites.   Many Germans, Italians, Japanese and French people were on holiday in Paris (I didn’t see many Americans).   Despite the cold, rainy weather that Paris has this time of year, it’s a beautiful place to visit in December because the entire city is decorated for Christmas.

Big department store, tiny boutiques, restaurants, cafés, churches, squares and entire streets–they are all decorated for Christmas!  I was giddy with joy every time I stepped outside our apartment door because I love Christmas decorations.  Best of all were the Christmas huts selling gifts, sweets, food and my husband’s favorite of all, vin chaud (hot wine).   The Champs-Elysées had the most huts to stroll–blocks and blocks.  Christmas music was playing over the loud speakers, traditional songs we know, but in French.   We strolled down the Champs during the day and came back at night to see the lights.  There were also Christmas huts elsewhere in the city; the metro stop near our apartment was very festive as was the area surrounding Sacre Coeur.

Galeries Lafayette has a “rock and roll Christmas” theme this year.  The holiday windows are best seen in this video that I shot with my iPhone.  It’s quite an event to come view the windows; it was packed with both adults and children.
