  • 5 Tips for Booking Better Trai 5 Tips for Booking Better Train Travel Online

    • From: andrewsmith
    • Description:

Sometimes, booking your ticket at the station ten minutes before your train leaves seems like the easiest option — even if it does raise your blood pressure and cost you more money. But what if we were to tell you that booking online can actually mean less hassle, less stress, and less money? Here are five top tips to help you book your journeys smarter:

      1. Book your tickets in advance

The earlier you book your train, the more you can save. Most services will let you buy tickets up to three months in advance, and can offer savings of up to 40%. And you can choose where you sit, too, which means no more standing in-between carriages waiting for a free space.

Some services will email you closer to the date, reminding you that you’ve booked a journey, but it’s best to take note of this yourself. The longer it is between booking and travelling, the more likely you are to forget times and dates, so stick a reminder on your smartphone or a colourful notice in your diary.

      2. Compare journeys

Planning a holiday? You can save a substantial amount of money just by shifting the break forward by a few days. If your dates are flexible, it’s always worth comparing times and prices. You can save travel time this way, too — some journeys will stop at every station, whereas others will skip the smaller ones.

Comparing journeys can also mean the difference between lugging several suitcases from platform to platform and waiting in the cold for a connecting train. Many services offer journeys with changes and journeys without, so it’s worth investigating before you book.

      3. Take note of company details

What if you need to take an earlier train? What if you have to cancel your trip? These things shouldn’t put you off booking online, but you do need to think about what you’d do if they occurred. Make sure the company you book with has good customer service and a phone number you can call if anything goes wrong. If you’re worried, call them up in advance and talk this through with them.

      4. Bring your booking details with you

Nowadays, most people have a smartphone, and pulling up a confirmation email is a lot less hassle than printing out two pages of booking details. Make sure your booking confirmation is already loaded on your phone, as a lot of stations have poor mobile service. If all else fails, just jot down your booking code somewhere and keep it safe — you’ll need it to retrieve your tickets from the machine.

      5. Don’t forget your payment card

If you paid for your journey using a card that you don’t normally use — an emergency credit card, for example — don’t forget to bring it with you. You’ll need the card you paid with to collect your tickets, and if you haven’t got it, there’s not much you can do. Again, this is just a matter of being organised. It’s worth it, when you think about all the money you’ll save.

  • Plan Your Affordable Vacation Plan Your Affordable Vacation in Australia

    • From: enadowdy
    • Description:

The Great Barrier Reef, Bondi Beach, the Opera House and the Outback.  There are so many natural and cultural wonders to be visited in Australia that tourism is booming for travel "down under".  If you have been planning your Australian vacation, we've got some great news for you.

Australia is experiencing a real growth in business, commerce and population.  It is great news for travellers who have always wanted to visit Australia as there are more flights available now than ever before, and more airlines competing with pricing and willing to take you there.

Depending where you are travelling from in North America, the flight to Australia is is about twenty hours.  Typically the airlines will stop in Vancouver Canada, then Japan and on to Australia.  Historically the cost has hovered around $2000 or more per person and part of the reason that travellers have hesitated in the past to fly to Australia is due to the length of the flight and also because of the cost.  But thanks to the increased demand for flights, it is possible to get cheap flights to Australia and book them conveniently online.

      • Avoid direct flights.  While convenient (and available from some major cities on the west coast) they are the most costly. Direct flights can also be more exhausting for some travellers (can you commit to more than twenty hours on one flight?).  There are more comfortable and convenient options.

      • Most travellers will book stop-overs on their way to Australia.  Countries such as Dubai and Hong Kong are fabulous to visit on a one day stop over.  Not only does it give you the opportunity to rest from the flight but it also allows you to take in some of the exotic local flavour of other countries on your way.  It enriches your travel experience and will leave you refreshed and ready to take on the adventurous continent of Australia when you arrive.

      • Lastly if you are planning on travelling for a few weeks, explore the opportunity to  purchase an "around-the-world" ticket which leaves you free to visit other continents usually for the same price as a direct flight to Australia.   It literally opens a world of travel opportunity if you have the time and inclination to explore.

When booking your travel to Australia (like other flights) the most economical rates will be for connecting flights that are also booked well in advance.  Since a trip to Australia is a more expensive vacation, plan at least two months ahead of time in order to get the best rates and choice availability for your flights.

  • Ancient Shanxi Province. Ancient Shanxi Province.

    • From: x123456
    • Description:

An ancient buildingMost of ancient Chinese architectures are located in Shanxi Province where there are seventy percent of old buildings with simple but elegant styles which were all built in Tang, Ming and Qing Dynasties. Last time, it’s really a meaningful experience of the culture of ancient Chinese buildings. What’s more, Another seventy percent of the buildings are situated in the southeast of Shanxi.

It was a nice day in the morning. We went to the our first destination Hongfu Temple by car. It’s said that an old man watched the temple with a few children in Jing Dynasty. Now it’s has been protected by the county as a historical site.

In spring, it’s very dry for less rainfall in Shanxi. The hillside beside the road was desolate. Seeing a little bit further, I found some of green leaves grew on the tree. Our motorcade got off the beltway to an unsurfaced narrow road where our cars bumped for a few minutes, with dust stirred up behind, and beside which are loess slopes.

Hongfu Temple is situated in a hidden alley. After three minutes’bumping on the way, a more than ten meters high and very wide loess wall came into our sight. Despite the dilapidated scene, the loess plateau looks very magnificent against our car BMW.

We entered the temple across the steps, where everything looked desolate, with a abandoned hall on the left side and a half-length statue standing on the hall. At the moment when we entered, we saw its paint faded and column inclined to a side. However, the sculptures on the ridge still show the art of the architectures in Jing Dynasty.

On the other hand, we left the temple and went along a meandering road to Taixin County to visit Foguang Temple.

It’s said that Foguang Temple was found many times later after a couple visited Shanxi for the fourth time. Because of that, the temple has occupied an important position in the architectural history of China. It’s the biggest wooden building built in the Tang Dynasty.

As the sun sets and wind blows, we were standing beside a stone engraved perhaps in Tang Dynasty with  inscriptions on it and began reading what’s written on it, feeling as if time had gone back to the past. I felt a sense of admiration while reading.

  • Tips For Traveling To Paris Wi Tips For Traveling To Paris With Girlfriends

    • From: Funkidivagirl
    • Description:

Last month I did something that I have only done once before: I took a vacation without my husband and children.  *GASP!*  I know, right?!  Who am I to be so bold and brazen, to travel across land and sea for several hours without them?  I tell you who – a very happy woman.

Don’t get me wrong – I love traveling with my kids, showing them the world and having adventures together.  But as any mother knows, a vacation with your family is not really a vacation in the truest sense.   And while I love traveling with my husband, he doesn’t like to shop for shoes and he probably thinks that I talk too much.   A girlfriend trip was what I needed and what better place than Paris!

I had been to Paris recently, once with my family and once with my husband, but I knew this trip with my friends would be different.   As we planned the trip via email, texts and a few face-to-face meetings, we were all excited, but also nervous.  Let’s be real: five women traveling together leaves a lot of room for drama and attitudes.    We were a varied bunch: married stay at home moms, professionals, singles and single moms.  Shenia, Christin, Natasha, Latoicha and me.  There would be five different personalities and five different expectations about how the trip should flow.  Since I had the most experience in Paris, I became the default planner.  I worried:  Would the women like the apartment that I had chosen?  Would they love Paris as much as I do?  Would we all get along?

My worries were for naught.  Everyone loved everything about Paris and we all had the time of our lives.  The whole trip, as Shenia would say, was divine.

Our divine blessing began with an uneventful flight and a cutie-pie driver (don’t worry husbands, he was only cute to the unmarried ladies) who was familiar with Atlanta.   He liked us and pitied us when we said that we had to haul all this luggage up 4 flights of stairs.  Instead of dropping us off at the curb, he was going to help us.  See, we knew that the elevator was being repaired when we rented the apartment, in fact we got a small price break for the inconvenience.   But yet, we packed like this – what in the world were we thinking?

  • Trying medicinal bathing with Trying medicinal bathing with the Dao people

    • From: acitvetraveasia
    • Description:

Medicinal bathing is a local feature of the indigenous Red Dao in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai. In Ta Phin Commune (Sa Pa District), tourists can spot many families drying herbs in their front yards.

Legend has it that on the last day of the year the Dao boiled leaves from the forest for medicinal bathing before welcoming the new year in. As this practice proves both effective and salubrious, a majority of Kinh people have considered it a unique feature of Red Dao culture. Each barrel of water usually contains at least 10 types of herbs, even up to 120. Every bathroom has a wardrobe to keep personal belongings and visitors feel quite relaxed to bathe in the typical wooden tubs filled with hot water and the aromatic smell of different herbs.

There are two types of bathrooms: a single for one wishing to bathe alone and a double for couples to share.

Stepping out from a steam-filled bathroom, Christine Smith—an American tourist—says; "I feel so relaxed, like being full of energy". Christine is no exception. Other Western tourists also feel the same about medical bathing in Sa Pa after a long trip through north-western provinces. Ly Ta May, 30, says bathing with medicinal herbs is a traditional practice of the Red Dao.

“In our village, either in winter or summer, the whole family boils a big pot of medicinal herbs to fill wooden tubs for themselves to bathe in the hope of curing ailments such as knee, hand, and foot pain, muscle pain, headache, back pain, excess alcohol, fatigue, poor blood circulation, and skin diseases.

“If women take to bathing with these herbs after giving birth, they will recover quickly and have a better blood circulation and beautiful skin”, she says.

      Getting medicinal herbs

Red Dao people in Sa Pa are famous for curing bone, joint, and muscle pains, common cold and flu symptoms. Collecting medicinal herbs is no easy task, says Chao Man May from Ta Van Village. “Medicinal herbs grow along the streams or in the forest. If you want to pick them, you’d rather go deep into the forest”, she says.

Like other Dao women, May has spent time teaching her young daughter about how to pick medicinal herbs where they often grow, and how to tell  the difference between the medicinal plants and poisonous varieties.
“This is very important because some poisonous herbs look much like medicinal ones. Only after about five or six trips to the forest, can my daughter find the right herbs”, she says.

She says the best time for picking medicinal herbs is in the early morning, as the dew preserves the essence of the sky and earth in them.

The Dao only take the branches and leaves, leaving the roots intact for growth until the next time of pruning.

The final step is to chop and dry the herbs in the sun so that they can be used for a long time. However, according to May, using fresh herbs is better than dried herbs.

The Red Dao’s treatment secrets have been passed down from generation to generation. Today, some medicinal remedies are given in Sa Pa as a special tourist service

Preparing water for medicinal bathing is time-consuming. It is boiled with both fresh and dried herbs in liquid form for people to soak up through the skin.

Dr. Tran Van On from Ha Noi University of Pharmacy says: “Each remedy of the Red Dao usually consists of between 10-120 different kinds of herbs, depending on regular or irregular medication”.

After many years of research, On has helped other Red Dao people process several kinds of herbs into pulverized substance for future use. The Red Dao’s medicinal bathing has become one of the northern mountainous province‘s attractions, even though it is still a mystery to foreign tourists who first set foot in Sapa.
