My tour book says this is a population of 283,000 but the guide said that was about 5 years ago.  Real estate prices have gone up 300% and still rising and the population now is 1.8 million mainly consisting of European and Mid-eastern cultures.  He said this is great for the people who already have property or businesses here but otherwise most locals are beginning to dislike the intrusion.  Welcome to Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Last evening was a time to play tourist in the most tourist area in this mountain community.  A 5 block walk down to the evening bazaar was on the schedule.  We walked the area, and then took in a lot of the side streets all of which had the same small swap meet look to them.  I purchased a couple more DVD’s, and something else.  Oh yes and the white chiffon open collar short sleeve tropical shirt that is so popular here.  About 1 hour of walking the literally hundreds of booths on many streets, my feet once again began hurting (remember my rule – never walk anywhere further than the mailbox) so I started back to the hotel.  Oh boy – this was not easy because all I was using was the tallest white hotel as a land mark.  I was so twisted around, and of course as you know if you travel much, street signs are extremely difficult to find if any exist at all.  But, I was smart enough to bring my trusty compass of which I pulled out and found at least what direction I was traveling.  I found that big white hotel on the map associated it with another local landmark and saw which way to start walking.  I finally got to the white hotel and started walking down the street, which luckily was mine, past the 3 massage businesses in each block, wood carvings, typical t-shirts, the guaranteed “original” not copies of watches, purses, and of course my DVD’s.  As I walked I finally started seeing some familiar businesses such as the ATM I use and soon saw a food vendor near my hotel that I had to sample the meat kabobs.  I had one chicken, one beef and one pork with a baked potato and salad for 45 baht each totaling $5.

I took it up to my room, opened one of the free bottles of water, sat on the bed, popped in Madagascar 2 in the laptop and had a great dinner theater for $7.50.  Too much food so I put some in the refrigerator for later.  I grabbed a candy bar and a piece of fruit for desert (the mini bar is free so I ate all I could) and my meal was complete.

With this full stomach and getting almost 9:30 (getting late for this old man) was time for me to sleep.  This hotel is very quiet so I had no trouble sleeping till about my usual waking time of 6:30.  (3:30 p.m. to you guys).  So as I am typing this you guys are just now thinking of what is for dinner and I am thinking of what to do this morning.

This evening I have scheduled a dinner cruise up/down the river on a small boat.  The brochure shows and says it will be an authentic Thai dinner.  Sort of tired of this authentic Thai stuff, sure would like to go back down to Burger King again.  But this dinner has a cruise so I will get to see some new areas.  My transport will pick me up at 6:30 p.m. (3:30 a.m. to you guys), and off I will go.  Still not sure what I will be doing from now till then.  I guess I will just sit here have a little more free coffee, send this e-mail to all of you and then off I will go…… not sure where but I am sure I will find something of interest to do……… (too many massage shops to stay bored)…..

More to follow tomorrow morning same time same place…..
