    • From: gmaso
    • Description:

River Road outside New Orleans is filled with plantation homes on both sides of the Mississippi; some available for tours and some not.

The Houmas House is a beautiful plantation house which has been restored and obviously not only open for tours but photography is encouraged. The grounds are beautifully manintained but with many modern sculptures and decor. Much of the furnishings are period but not original. One criticism of the house which I have seen is that it is a wealthy individual's collection. True but the house has been saved and restored.

The property also serves as a B&B and there are a number of modern buildings behind the mansion itself. It also houses what is apparently a well thought of restaurant although we didn't eat there.

The original kitchen dating to the 1700's is still intact as seen here.

Again not original furniture but this is the bed Bette Davis slept in while she filmed "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" at Houmas House.

One of the original garconnieres on the property. Most if not all plantation homes had these buildings which were separate from the main house and housed male family members who had reached puberty. Many garconnieres have been destroyed at other plantation homes.

The walkway from the gift shop to the beginning of the tour takes you through some very nice garden areas with some very old oaks.
