First day is acclaimed as Govatsa Dwadashi or Vasu Baras in which ‘Go’ means cow, ‘Vatsa’ means calf and ‘Dwadashi’ means 12th day of month. Prithu son of tyrant Kind Vena worshipped cow on this day because in Hindu Puranas earth has been portrayed as cow. However, this terrified all gods so, they made him concealed in universe. People usually purchase gold and utensils on this day and worship god for prosperity in their life and home.

Third day is celebrated as Choti Deepavali or Narak Chaturdasi declaring defeat of Narakasura form Lord Krishna and Satyabhama (Krishna’s wife).  Special puja is done for Lord Krishna and Vishnu on these days. In Rajasthan it is celebrated as ‘Roop Chaudas’ and in Gujarat it is commenced as ‘Kali Chaudas’.

Fourth day is dedicated to Lakshmi Puja because on churning of ‘Ksheer Sagar’ Goddess appeared in front of everyone and ultimately was given to Lord Vishnu. Major celebration can be seen in ‘Baniya’ (merchant class) community as they start new accounts on this day. Devi Laksmi, God Kuber, Lord Ganpati and Lord Vishnu are worshipped. People decorated their homes with ‘kandils’, rangoli, flower garland, ‘bandanwaars’, electric lightning and floating candles. ‘Diyas’ made of clay are lighted with ghee in it.

Fifth day is celebrated as ‘Goverdhjan’ ‘Puja’, ‘Vishwakarama’ day or ‘Bali Pratipada’. On this day Raja Bali was sent to nether world when Lord Vishnu’s incarnation set foot on his head. Lord Krishna lifted ‘Goverdhan Parvat’ to break ego of Dev ‘Indira’ and save ‘Brajwasis’ (people of Vrindavan) as ‘Goverdhan’ ‘Puja’. People go to temple where lord ‘Goverdhan’ is made of cow dung and 56 types of food is prepared for them. This day is also dedicated to the god Vishwakarm, the divine architect of gods who constructed magnificent Dwarka city for Lord Krishna and Indraprastha for Pandavas.

Sixth day is celebrated as ‘Yama Dwitya’ or ‘Bhai Dooj’ when Goddess Yamuna invited her brother lord Yamraj (god of death) to his home for feat. On this day sisters invite their brother for fest at their home. After doing ‘tilak’ on forehead brother touches feet of sister and give them a gift. When Yamraj went to Yamuna home he gave her a promise that who so ever will celebrate this day he will not take him to his world rather they will be sent to ‘Baikunth Lok’ (abode of Vishnu).

The city of Agra stands Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar’s capital. Full credit goes to the Archeological Survey of India for this perfectly preserved example of a Mughal city at the height of the empire’s splendour. It is an attraction no visitor to Agra should miss.

This walled city contains the mausoleum of the Sufi fakir, Saleem Chisti who is said to have granted Akbar and his Hindu queen Jodhabai their wish for a son. The main entrance to Fatehpur Sikri is through the 175 feet Buland Darwaza, the highest gateway in the world. It was built by Akbar to commemorate his victory over Khandesh in Gujarat.

The photographs show some of the splendours of the fort city. One realises that since most monuments in India tours are made of sand stone, it is best to photograph them either during dawn or during dusk. Generally, 100 ASA film would do fine and in the summers and the afternoons you should keep the shutter speed high. If you are clicking at dawn or dusk, you would not require any filters either since the sandstone structures do take an identity of their own.

In the first of the adjoining pictures you see a smallish building at dusk. This building at the north eastern end of the walled city is where Akbar founded his religion Din-e-Ilahi, which was an attempt in synthesising all major religions of the world. On the foreground you should be able to see some squarish markings. These markings were painted during Akbar's reign and form a huge chauparh (an ancient Indian game) board. Akbar is said to have played with human game pieces.

The Panch Mahal, a five-storeyed tower, the highest point in Fatehpur Sikri. This extremely airy tower is extremely is supposed to have been used by one of the emperor's many queens. The picture taken at dawn shows the western part of Fatehpur Sikri with the Buland Darwaza at a distance.

A proper Tours India through the walled city with an experienced guide, from the Bulund Darwaza upto the rear entrance and moat, would take about 3 hours. Just beyond the moat is an old bungalow, built in 1908 by the British. It is now used by the Archeological Survey of India.

  • Mount Kailash Pilgrimage Tour Mount Kailash Pilgrimage Tour 14 Days

    • From: redpandatravel
    • Description:

      Mt. Kailash

Mt. Kailash, 6,714 m. is situated to the north of the Himalayan barrier, wholly within Tibet. It is the perfect mountain with awesome beauty, with 4 great faces. It is the spiritual centre for four great religions: Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, the Jain religion and the pre-Buddhist animistic religion – Bonpo. To Tibetans it is known as Khang Rimpoche (Precious Jewel of Snow) and they see it as the novel of the world. It is said that a stream from the mountain pours into a nearby lake and from here rivers flow in the four cardinal directions. The River of the Lion Mouth to the North, the River of the Horse Mouth to the east, the River of the Peacock Mouth to the south and the River of the Elephant Mouth to the West. Strangely enough, four major rivers do indeed originate near Kailash, the Indus, the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra), the Karnali and the Sutlej.

Tibetans believe that it is the residence of Demchog, a fierce looking tantric deity who lives there with his consort, Dorje Phagmo. For the Tibetans also, it is a particularly special place in that their poet saint Milarepa, spent several years here meditating in a cave. For the Hindus Mount Kailash is the earthly manifestation of Mt. Meru, their spritual centre of the universe, described as a fanatastic ‘world pillar’ 84,000 miles high, around which all else revolves, its roots in the lowest hell and its summit kissing the heavens. On the top lives their most revered God, Shiva, and his consort Parvati.

1For the Jains, an Indian religious group, Kailash is the site where their first prophet achieved enlightenment. For the older, more ancient religion of Bon, it is the site where its founder Shanrab is said to have descended from heaven. It was formerly the spiritual centre of Zhang Zung, the ancient Bon Empire that once included all of western Tibet. Bon people walk around the mountain in a counter

Clockwise manner, unlike the other religions.

Over the centuries pilgrims have constantly journeyed immense distances to achieve enlightenment or cleanse themselves of sin, braving enormous distances, particularly harsh weather and bandit attacks.

  • In Touch with the Real World: In Touch with the Real World: Vietnam Bicycle Tour

    • From: Activetravel
    • Description:

Because the technology makes traveling easier than it was hundreds years ago, today people fly from places to places to experience the different cultures in various countries. Vietnam, however, is one place that people think it is the place left in the world that is so close to the “reality.” Many destinations have not yet been explored by travelers.

Vietnam is a bicycle-friendly country. Many people use bikes to commute in Vietnam. Bicycle travelers, Bill Fridl, Patrick Morris and David Foster chose their ways to discover the country. They cycled in Vietnam between 1995 and 2000. If you choose this method to sightsee in Vietnam, time can be the issue. Plan a trip with time flexibility to ensure a good quality trip. Cycling in Vietnam, time and energy are what you need. Knowing basic techniques to take care your bike would be a plus, and you can usually find some locals to help you with the bicycle problems. However, the language barrier could be a challenge.

The bicycle brings more adventure excitments

People who had traveled to Vietnam agreed that it was an interesting experience in general, but the bicycle tours definitely brought more adventurous excitements. There are two directions you can go. From north to south, you can visit Hanoi, Hue, Danang and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) in that order. Or choose the other way travel from south to north. You can fly to Saigon and bike to Danang, Hue and Hanoi. I figure that if I am biking from place to place, I don’t want to go back and forth. Additionally, I want to at least visit and spend some time at the four big cities in Vietnam.

According to some experienced bicycling travelers, it will take about three weeks to finish the route, but it really depends on how much time you want to spend in these places as a tourist, meaning sightseeing and just hanging out to relax. The benefit and disadvantage of the bike tour is that you might feel the cultural shocks sooner than regular “tourists” because you are so close to the locals.

Be prepared for the cultural clashes

Beginning from national capital Hanoi, a city called the “Paris of the Orient” because of the beautiful lakes and shaded streets. The beauty of the bike tour is that you can meet the locals and observe what they are doing every day. Friendly smiles, sunshine beaches and yummy food, they are all the amazing things to attract biker’s attention on the way to their next destination. While hanging out nearHanoi, Frenchtown, Ho Chi Minh Museum, Presidential Palace, Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple are hot spots to visit. Hanoi is a historical town where visitors can find evidence of the history.

Hearing so many people’s stories about visiting Hanoi, Bat Trang sounds like an attractive place. The town specializes in making large pottery and porcelain using traditional methods. The history dates back since the 16th century. This destination might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I am usually attracted by the things like that. Besides, Bat Trang is located in the southeast of Hanoi about 17 kilometers away.

Hue, known as one of the most beautiful cities in Vietnam, is the royal family’s former residence. Hue is also the heart of culture, religion and education. After days of biking, visiting the Thien Mu Pagoda is a peaceful journey. When you feel like a little bit of sunshine and salty water, the Thuan An Beach connects to the South China Sea and is about 13 kilometers from Hue. The beach has a protected lagoon. Although foreigners need to pay the fee to enter the area, it is still a popular location.

Along the Perfum River (Huong Giang), there are many places to see such as Hon Chen Temple, Minh Mang Tomb and Gia Long Tomb. They are solemn locations with great masterpieces of architecture. Other things such as people’s activities on the streets and the view at the Trang Tien Bridge can also be appealing to visitors as well.

Start from Hue and bike 108 kilometers south, you arrive at Danang. It might sound like a long way, but you will enjoy the view of Lang Co Beach and Hai Van Pass. In 1965, Danang became one of the biggest US military bases in Southeast Asia.

The China Beach (Non Nuoc) is about 15 kilometers from Danang and about one kilometer away from the Marble Mountains. The beach is a popular surfing and swimming resort from March to August. Sponsored by the Vietnamese government and other various organizations, there is a surfing contest held in the area every year. Danang is also the third biggest city in Vietnam.

Finally, you reach Saigon. The city had been through so many times of name changes. Today, it is known as the Ho Chi Minh City worldwide although not many Vietnamese use it. Saigon is probably the most famous city in Vietnam due to its frequent media exposure.

In Saigon, I won’t miss the water puppet theater for the world. The show is only 20 to 30 minutes long. It is for the children’s entertainment, but it will please all ages. There are two fixed venues, History Museum and War Crimes Museum. It requires many difficult techniques to make a great water puppets show. There are also fixed venues for water puppet shows in Hanoi. Planning the trip, I would probably include the shows at the two cities and called it a Vietnam Water Puppet Tour.

Some people think Saigon is a dangerous city because of the aggressive drivers, prostitutes, child beggars and other criminals. Experienced travelers recommend being aware of the bui doi (street kids). Vietnamese called them the dust of life. They sell random goods for a living and sometimes steal from tourists. Foreign bikers also think that it is the most confusing place to ride a bike. There are not many traffic lights in the district. Most of the roads seem to be one-way, but not many people follow the signs so be prepared for the chaotic situation.

Move slowly and prepare for the chaotic streets

Today, the Internet is so convenient that there is so much information about traveling. Use the search engine leads you to many travelers’ unique stories.

The Tumacácori Mission was established in 1691 by Father Eusebio Francisco Kino. It was established one day before the Guevavi Mission, making it the oldest Jesuit mission site in southern Arizona. The mission was originally called San Cayetano de Tumacácori. It was established at an existing native O'odham or Sobaipuri settlement on the east side of the river.

After the Pima rebellion of 1751, the mission was moved to the present site on the west side of the Santa Cruz river and renamed San José de Tumacácori. By 1848, the mission was abandoned and began falling into severe disrepair. Preservation and stabilization efforts began in 1908 when the area was declared a National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt and continue today.
