  • Elephant Seals at Ano Nuevo CA Elephant Seals at Ano Nuevo CA State Park

    • From: kkgough
    • Description:

Jan/Feb is the best time of year to see the hundreds of Elephant Seals that congregate on the shore of Ano Nuevo State Park in Northern California.  You can see bulls defending their harems, cows and pups.  The air is filled with the sound of them barking and trumpeting to each other.

Ano Nuevo is a few miles north of the city of Santa Cruz.  To see the elephant seals, you must sign up for a two hour tour that is led by a docent.  It's a moderate hike and great for kids aged 7 and up.

This video was shot in January 2012 on a tour taken by my kids and me.

    • From: rabkdoomfish
    • Description:

All these pictures were taken in San Simeon, California

Picture 1 (The Mystic Pool) -

This misty pool is the pool created for the newspaper tycoon, William Randolph Hearst. Although my family and I saw this pool in February, the mist gives the pool a very mysterious look.

Picture 2 (The Epic Elephant Seal) -

My family went to San Simeon, and across the highway from Hearst Castle, we saw a few elephant seals coming up the beach. I was able to get this one as it flopped its body in the air to move farther up the beach.

Picture 3 (Lounging on the Beach) -

This particular elephant seal was different from the others. While the others just slepped or didn't do anything, this one would turn around and look at anyone who was close to it. While I was taking a picture of the seal, it turned around and looked at me. After I took this picture, I felt as though it was suspicious of me.

Picture 4 (The Creepy Tree) -

When I went to Hearst Castle through the fog of February, I saw this tree next to one of the guest houses. The branches made the tree look old and withered while the fog made the tree look creepy and sinister. I had to get a picture of this creepy shot.

      Picture 5 (Sleepy Guy) -

In between trying to slide up the beach and out of the water, this seal took long, five-minute breaks. This was definitly the laziest seal I had ever seen.
