  • Flying To The Smokies Flying To The Smokies

    • From: FlyingMark
    • Description:

I love the Smoky Mountains.  I fly to Tennessee every year to celebrate both my father's birthday and my own.  I've fallen in love with Townsend, TN, which is in the Cades Cove area on the other side of the mountain from Gatlinburg and Pidgeon Forge.

Growing up in Dayton, TN, I remember the days before Gatlinburg and Pidgeon Forge became commercialized as they are today.  I remember getting cherry apple cider at Hillbilly Village...and I remember going back as a young adult and not even being able to find Hillbilly Village.  While many travelers just love Dollywood and the other attractions in the area, I was disappointed that such a beautiful area could be turned into a virtual Vegas in the Mountains.

Then my folks introduced me to Townsend and I go there every year.  The town is close enough to Gatlinburg if you want shopping or entertainment, but it's a much more peaceful area with Little River running through it and providing fishing, swimming and tubing fun.

Cades Cove is an amazing place where you will see wildlife ranging from bear to wolves to deer to turkeys and more.  It's a 5 mile loop that you drive on a newly paved (but narrow) road.  It's very peaceful and there are some nice spots to stop and explore historic churches, cabins and other buildings.

The Knoxville Airport is only about a 25 minute drive from Townsend, which makes it very convenient if you're flying.  The only thing I don't like about flying is the baggage fees, but I've learned to travel light.

Earning my turkey dinner this year, I got to do an amazing hike to see the incredible Ramsey Cascades Falls in Smoky Mountain National Park just a couple days before Thanksgiving enroute to visiting family. It was a spectacularly warm/sunny autumn day, perfect for this 10mile round trip hike with the falls being the prize destination at the top, halfway point. It was a totally exhilarating experience!!

The rolling hills through the Ozark Mountains in Missouri provide a gorgous display of color in the fall.  When compared to the blue of the sky or the waters of the many lakes of the area, the hills seem to be on fire.  This picture was taken in the state park, at Lake of the Ozarks. it was a bass tournament weekend, and there were lots of boats on the water.  My husband and I took a weekend to relax, and photo shoot the fall colors.  I have heard people compare the Ozarks to the Smoky Mountains, and I agree that they are both beautiful.

  • The timeless Cafe Savoy The timeless Cafe Savoy

    • From: evbk
    • Description:

I realized that when I took you on the "Café Tour" that I left out a very important cafe... the timeless, Café Savoy.  Café Savoy is an art nouveau gem that dates back to 1893 and is a monument to Prague's rich history.  The café is very airy and open with tall windows that allow you to look out and watch the world go by while you relax and enjoy freshly brewed coffee.
Once a decadent coffeehouse, Café Savoy was a favorite smoky haunt after the Velvet Revolution.  The Savoy was cleaned up in late 2001, and most recently reconstructed in 2005, but stayed true to its Art Nouveau past.
The 7-meter high Neo-Renaissance ceiling with beautiful sparkling chandeliers ...here you can see it in two different lights...
The food is delicious and carefully prepared, and the staff efficient and courteous, reminding us of a time knows as the First Republic, just after WWI...a time when Prague boasted one of the highest standards of living in all of Europe.
      The "Savoy Breakfast"
(toast, Prague ham, Emmental cheese, soft-boiled egg, homemade bread & homemade jam; creamy butter, pastry, and coffee... splendid!!!!)

In May 2009, my husband and I visited Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. It was absolutely beautiful! We had seen brochures depicting breathtaking waterfalls that one could hike to, so we packed our maps and headed off to find these waterfalls for ourselves. This picture is of the Juney Whank Falls inside the Smokies.

That's Bobo, the friendly Malay satay seller at Lau Pa Sat in Singapore.   Cooking 15 sticks of satay on hot coals takes about 5 minutes of furious fanning (he's holding a straw fan).   Gosh it was hot & smoky standing right in front of him, as I tried to get a good photo.  But it smelt simply delicious!    Check out the tasty satay in my other photo!
