I tooka month-long dream trip to Europe this fall, my very first abroad.  We travelled around on our own for the first 5 days, went on a 12-day cruise through the Medeteranean and then spent another 5 days touring Tuscany.  We saw many omg-sights and I filled three memory sticks with digital photos.  Some of the magical places were Windsor Castle, England, Rome, Sorrento, Capri, Positano, Mone Carlo, Florence, Venice, Naples, Athens, Pompeii, Kusadasi Turkey, Corfu, Santorini -Oia, Cinquaterra.  We put ourselves on the "Gelato-A-Day" meal plan and ate our way through Europe. And, we took every possible mode of transportation, including donkey and gondola.

This is a small cliff overlooking a narrow Sorrento roadway, at the southern tip of Italy's Amalfi coast.  I like this photo because I think it captures the contrasting stillness and movement of Italy, the serene, ancient beauty alongside a modern race towards progress.

  • On the road to Sorrento, Italy

This taken on the way to Sorrento, Italy on the Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi coast is undeniably beautiful. If I were to pick a dream location to live in, I would pick the Amalfi Coast and would die there completely happy picking this place. I was also there for summer solstice, and they had firework displays at night. Riding down the coastline on a scooter while the fireworks went off was hands down one of the highlights of my life. Oh, and they also make the best limoncello there!

  • Arriving in Positano

    • From: johnfisher11
    • Description:

We took a bus the previous day from Sorrento to Positano.Arriving, we were deposited atop the Amalfi cliffs overlooking Positano far below. We might have hiked down but were leary of climbing back up.

Enjoyed a fabulous lunch at the nearest hotel to the hilltop, and watched tour boats deliver people to the

beach below.Aha! Next morning we caught the ferry for a scenic ocean ride to the pier on Positano's beach.

My wife is expressing her jubilation at arriving safely and calmly after the previous days hair-raising ride

along the twisting cliffside Amalfi coast road.

    • Description:

We were scheduled to take a cruise as part of an optional tour while in Sorrento, Italy but the water was too rough.  Since we wer so bummed, our tour guide asked a friend who owns a restaurant on this teeny, tiny beach off the beaten path, to  pick us up at our hotel and drive us to the beach that his restaurant opens onto.  The only charge to us was that we eat in his restaurant -- not a problem.  We had the freshest fish in all of Italy for lunch that day.

  • Real Vesuvius?

    • From: rufferc
    • Description:

I believe this is Mt. Vesuvius. I can't say for sure, because it was a rumor among my fellow travelers. I had to snap a shot, just in case, but I forgot to verify it with our bus driver. I was travelling from Rome to Sorrento, and here was this lovely mountain next to our pit stop. Many of my fellow travellers were taking pictures, so I did too. I figured if this was Mt. Vesuvius then we must be near our final destination. Once back on the bus, we drove for another hour. Maybe it was just a nice looking mountain after all. Despite the amiguity, I still like this shot of a lovely cloudy day over an Italian mountain (whichever one it is).

  • An Italian Secret Garden

An Italian Secret Garden - Sorrento, IT

      15 June 2007

Oh my God, I am in heaven. I really, really am! We are at a lemon/flower farm in Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast in Italia. The kids are barefoot, running wild in the lemon grooves with Michaela, the owner. Nana is helping her prune and Koa is climbing trees and picking lemons the size of large oranges. This farm is right on the cliff so we have a completely unobstructed view of the entire coast. We can watch the sun set over the water while we listen to Ben Harper’s version of “Sexual Healing” on mini music! We are drinking awesome “house wine” and I just lost pitifully to Ryder in Cribbage.

This is not Disneyworld…To get down to this place you have to walk down a 350 meter VERY NARROW stone walkway. Ryder was very, very (and I mean VERY brave) man today and decided to drive down it with out rental Peugeot 107 (SUPER compact car). As he put it, there were times when, even with the side mirrors folded in, he was centimeters from the hundred-year-old walls. When he stands in the middle of the road, his “wing span” reaches both walls of the road

Imagine a secret garden. Someone’s personal farm 100 years ago. Not a commercial thing, a family thing that has been passed down for generations and the new generation is making do by renting out 4 rooms in the farm house…Lemon trees, orange trees, bougainvillea, honey suckle, lavender, and roses blanket you and make you feel at home. Then, you are surprised to find a small kid’s playground tucked away to the left, overlooking the Mediterranean…Keep walking and you find a stone pizza oven and a full on BBQ that overlooks yet another amazing cliff-side view! Cowboy Junkies “I am so lonesome I could cry” is playing as the kids play with the BUCKET of toys Michaela has for them (because she has a 3 year old too!) There is a chicken coop, which provides fresh eggs for your breakfast (served any time you want) on the terrace overlooking the ocean. It is not a fancy place. The beds are OK, and you better bring your own soap… If you are looking for 5 star, look somewhere else. But if you are looking for amazing scenery, a splendid garden and a magical place, this is it!

Ok, I have to add an aside here… I forgot the UK adaptor for my ‘puter in Lagos. So, I was so, so, so sad because I have to write! I looked all over Rome and could not find one. Then yesterday, in the ULTIMATE romantic gesture (he hated that I wrote that) Ryder searched all over and finally found one! So, now I can really enjoy this trip doing what I love, traveling and experiencing and writing about it.

This morning we went hiking around some ruins about 3 minutes from here. Koa and Nana kept asking where the “beach” was, and although we were right on the water, there was no real beach. (Remember, this is no Disney!) But we did stumble upon a small cove where they were able to hike down and swim in the super buoyant waters of the Mediterranean. I love it that every garbage you pass is full of empty wine bottles! Ah, Italia!

After the hike/swim we drove into Sorrento. Ok, you gotta love a place that offers you free samples of Limochello every few steps! Ryder went on a buying spree (note to self, if you want your husband to buy things, feed him Limonchello!) We had lunch at a great place that our friends the Marks recommended, The Lanterna Restaurant. The kids split pasta and Ryder and I ate off the self-serve anti pasta bar. Fresh asparagus! Risotto! Spicy octopus! Herring!  Calamari! Jugs of house red! Yummy! And all for about 45 Euros. That seems to be our going rate for all our meals. That is about $60 USD. Well worth it for amazing food and great wine.

We drove back (but not down the stone path) and made it back just in time for the siesta that seems mandatory for all because all the shops close as well! So we all went down in our air-conditioned 2-bedroom apartment! Woke up just in time for sunset!

      FYI: Our Lemon Farm was:

Via Calata di Punta Capo 23

  • My Italian Boyfriend...!

    • From: christina87
    • Description:

I promised myself that I would take a dream trip to Italy to visit the proverbial motherland. I decided that I would go alone, to ensure I would see and do every last little thing I wanted. No one else, just me! And so I did...

I spent 5 spectacular days in Rome, then I traveled farther south to make Sorrento my home base.

I was absolutely having the time of my life and fulfilled all my dreams. To a point. One thing I did not do was get on a scooter, as I so desperately wanted. But it proved more difficult than I imagined.  I rented one, sat on it and promptly dumped it in an alley way. I was clearly not destined to scoot around Sorrento, so I wheeled it back to the agent and walked away sullen, forlorn and with minor bleeding.

So I cheered myself up and went shopping. I ended up with a few bags that were too heavy to carry around. I plopped down on a bench in the square and waited for my bus to the hotel to arrive. I was going to relax and people watch. While I waited, a boy jumped off a scooter and walked by me, and said hello. I smiled and said hi. I sat a while longer.

The boy came back. He introduced himself and asked if he could take me back to my hotel instead of waiting for the bus. I was slightly hesitant at first but then I figured - ah what the heck, I DO really want to ride the scooter. So I agreed.

I had an amazing ride, bags and all, back up the mountain to my hotel. I loved every second of it, and I had a view of the seaside town I had not been afforded before. When we got to my hotel, he offered to take me out for some wine. I thought it was a great idea!

We went down to the Sorrentine waterfront to a little restaurant with seating on a deck out over the water.  We drank the most delicious local wines.  We chatted about out respective homes and jobs. He was instantly charming and told me how I was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, all while holding and kissing my hand across the table.  We watched the sun set over the water as the fisherman’s boats listed back and forth in the lazy Bay of Naples.

As it got later, he realized that he needed to head to work at a local hotel.  He dropped me off at my hotel and again kissed my hand, both cheeks, and reminded me that I was the most beautiful girl in the world. He promised we would speak soon.

About a year and a half later, we still keep in touch! And we both plan on my going back to visit my Sorrentine boyfriend!
