  • Mt Yasur, Tanna, Vanuatu (chec Mt Yasur, Tanna, Vanuatu (check out the face in the ash cloud)

    • From: modelmeemaw
    • Description:

My husband and I spent three cruising season’s in the South Pacific on our 43ft trawler “Special Blend”. Vanuatu was one of our favorite places. Port Resolution was our entry to the island of Tanna, Vanuatu We had to cross the ash field of Mt Yasur to Lenical where we were to do our check in with customs, immigration and quarantine.

The mode of transportation was a pickup truck. I was riding in the back on a 2x4 plank. Mt Yasur was spewing smoke and ash.  I programed my camera for rapid shoot. This face appeared in one of the frames. I feel I had the protection of whatever spirit might be there. This volcano has been active since Capt Cook’s time, the glow led him to this island. Yasur Volcano is one of the most accessible volcanos in the world. Standing on the rim and feeling the fury of Mother Earth is one that will never be equaled. We made three visits to this island, and three visits to the volcano.....awesome!!!!!

  • Mount Tabor Mount Tabor

    • Description:

When you think of volcanos, you think of Hawaii, but do you ever think of Portland, Oregon?

It's true, Portland, Oregon is the only city to have a volcano, Mt. Tabor, within its city limits.

Don't worry, it's not active and hasn't been so for a very long time.  If you go, you will see a beautiful green hill with many trees and vistas of downtown to the west and of Mt. Hood to the east.

Closed on Sundays to only foot traffic, this is great place to walk, job, bicycle or just sit and enjoy nature.

Veteran photogs might find flaws with this image from Sicily's volcano.  But I love the size contrast between my traveling companions, on the far rim, and the crater in the foreground.

    • Description:

The picture of Volcano Arenal was taken from in front of our room at Roca Negra Inn near La Fortuna Costa Rica. The sunsets in Costa Rica are awesome and we intend to return there as often as we can. The people are friendly and content with their lives and seem very happy even though they make it from day to day. The food in most loutdoor restaurants are phenomenal. The best food I have tasted. Costa Rica is a must see for everyone.

A couple of months ago, my girlfriend and I took a trip to Guatamala with friends who were originally from there. They wanted to show us some spectacular volcanos, in particular - Lake Atitlan. On the way there it was also a wonderful opportunity to experience the culture and lifestyle of some of the indigenous peoples living in the countryside. This child on her mother's back caught my eye from a pit stop we made in a rural village during our ascent.

Laguna de Apoyo is a great place to spend the day and cool off in the freshwater volcanic lake. We spent a relaxing day kayaking, sunbathing and swimming on a day trip while staying in Grenada, Nicaragua. It is a beautiful setting and a nice getaway from the city.
